workbench 3.1 booting problems
« on: August 22, 2010, 12:28:57 PM »
just got standard amiga 1200 from ebay complete with a 4 gig hd.  I'm trying to boot from the hard drive, however if i do i get blank workbench screen.  No icons are displayed and i don't think its fully booting.

The seller showed me a screen of the system booted, however it is clear from the screen that some sort of memory expenstion is present, which has been removed.

Could this cause the system not to boot correctly?
Is there anyway to reset the system?

I don't want to reinstall the drive as the seller says its full of games and programs.

I've booted the system without startup and can see the drive, thats about as far as i've got.

Any advice would be appreciated

Many thanks

If you can boot without startup-sequence, then enter the following commands into the DOS window:

rename devs/dosdrivers/#? storage/dosdrivers
rename devs/monitors/#? storage/monitors
rename s/user-startup s/user-startup.disabled
rename wbstartup wbstartup.disabled

Now wait until disk activity has finished, then wait another five seconds and then reboot.

Does it now boot completely and show the desktop with icons?

I'm guessing you don`t have the 3.1 or 3.0 floppy disks.

When you say boot without startup do you mean boot with both mouse buttons down and you can see the hard drive.
