Cleaning 1084s Monitor using Retr0Bright
« on: August 16, 2010, 04:23:18 PM »
Hi,

Has anyone tried to clean their 1084s Monitor using Retr0Bright? My problem is that I do not know exactly how to do so. At first I thought of open it and try to remove the plastic so that I can clean it. However I was told that removing the plastic might not be that easy.

I therefore thought whether I could just wash the Monitor by just using a cloth (i.e. - without opening it). However I do not know if I could do potential damage!!

Regards,

I have not tried Retr0Bright, so I can't comment on that but I can give a bit of advice on taking the 1084s apart. If you are handy with tools it is not too difficult to disassemble but care must be taken with the tube.

Once you have removed the back plastic shell be very careful not to let the tube drop down on it's neck of the tube. This will more often than not break the neck and render the tube useless.

Not trying to discourage you, just giving a heads up. I had a 1084s I was repairing and I accidentally let the tube slip back on to the neck and then there was no reason to proceed with the repair.

You can't really "wash" things with retrobright, it needs some time to do its thing (hours at least). Usually with larger items you make a gel as per the instructions and apply that, but personally I would not do that with an assembled monitor - too great a risk having the goop drip inside through the air vents and other gaps.
