AROS for the PPC Mac?
« on: May 12, 2006, 02:57:14 AM »
I've got 2 PPC macs and was wondering if AROS has made it to this machine yet. Or if anyone has heard anything about it happening in the future.

So far AROS runs hosted on PPC Linux.  There is this bounty for running AROS hosted on OS-X.  I believe there is a dev working on a PPC native, but don't quote me on that one.

There is of course, emulation of x86 enviroments that you could run AROS on.  With some changes come up via the AROS-64 release, that will make lives easier to port AROS to any platform.  Time will tell.

There is aros for Sam440. It has a few issues, but I don´t think it´s abandoned, only that it moves a bit slow.

So for PPC macs, I think such a version would need a developer.

While there is a native PPC version of AROS for Sam440EP and Sam440EP Flex based computers, the MAC version is Linux kosted.

You have to wonder why this is, since the version for Acube motherboards shouldn't be that different than what would be required by a PPC Mac version. Perhaps the fact the Apple hardware is not completely documented has held up the creation of a native Apple port.

Both Linux and *BSD source code is available, as well as documentation to many of the chips used in these machines.

The systems being undocumented is largely a myth.

Well, your opinion on this I would definitely trust. I've always wondered where MorphOS developers got the information to create the  direct hardware calls.

But where  did Linux and BSD developers originally get the info?

And why isn't there a native Mac AROS port?
