I should add that some people would have booted to a directory manager or menu system.

Windows was really the inferior of GUIs available, but at that time I was never critical of something that did what it was suppose to do. The problem nowadays is that you have to deal with Windows at some point no getting around it.

there's plenty of corporate environments where you might not need to use windows. Google for one.

Depends if you ever used those ;) I'm actually a bit shocked how many amigans in this thread have owned PC on those MS DOS and Win 3.x times :-) I was in practise totally virgin for M$ stuff until some friends started to switch to PC after Win95... until then we all had only Amigas.
Daily MorphOS user and Amiga active.

If its any consolation, when I finally moved to a peecee, it was win 98. Hated it like rats. Got ME later, which was even worse.

No, but I should have!

I didn't own a PC, but had to get a Bridgeboard for my A2000 because of work.  I did not mind MSDOS too much, but Windows3.x!!! Don't make me think of that again, it will cause nightmares.

No, I had an Amiga. I got my first PC in 1998 with Windows 95 Rev. 2 on it (I had to program Java at university). My A1200 lasted my up to then, with an added '040 for the last year.
