A2620 ('020) + GVP HC+8 RAM issue
« on: July 17, 2010, 09:44:46 PM »
I've had a 3.1 ROM ECS A2000 for a good while now. It has a GVP Impact HC+8 card controlling my SCSI drive and with 8MB onboard. I just added an A2620 68020 accel with 2MB 32-bit RAM.

HD was not seen at boot.

Finding a similar case via Google, I dropped the GVP card's RAM to 4MB and indeed it boots up under 68020.

But only the 2MB on the A2620 (FAST RAM) are seen. No FAST RAM from the GVP card is seen. (When I boot under 68000 I get 4MB total, all on the GVP, as far as FAST RAM.)

Can I not see RAM in the Zorro slots when under 68020 control on this accelerator?

Thanks.

Does the GVP card need to be jumpered to 4MB?

The A2620 has the latest ROMs, BTW.

Indeed, and it has been.

Interesting, I seem to remember having a similar issue with a 2630 and a GVP HC+8 card.  I think I ended up disabling the RAM on the GVP card and sticking a SupraRAM card in set to 4MB. (I was still using the SCSI on the GVP card.)

Incompatibility? Maybe. It was 2 years ago and I no longer have the hardware to play with.

Slightly off topic, but if you're in the market for a different accelerator, I've got a GVP '030 with 4MB onboard I've been too lazy to list on eBay...

So will the GVP Impat HC+8 - even with 4MB RAM only - not work with the A2620 (68020 card), as far as making its RAM available?

It appears not to be working.

Is there a cheap Zorro II RAM card I can grab to replace it (but keeping it for SCSI usage)?

Thanks.  :-(

Most ZII RAM cards seem to go fairly cheaply, but now that I think about it, I'm not sure if I used a SupraRAM or a Microbotics 8-UP set to 4mb, I had them both at the time...

I had a similar problem myself in the past but with the 2630 card.  If you had your HC+8 initially set for 8MB, maybe you need to re-adjust the jumper on the board for 4MB.  Also, you can jump the memory on your HC+8 up to 6MB with no problem.  Since you have 2MB on your 2320, it leaves you the option to install another 6MB (2MB + 6MB).  Just remember to change the jumper setting on the HC+8 board.

I did change the jumper settings on the HC+8 to reflect the proper amount of RAM.  I found that not at 8MB or 6MB would the HC+8's SCSI drive appear, under A2620 control, but under 4MB.  I had seen another user report this in searching on the issue.

Is there anywhere I can find another 2MB of 32-bit ZIP memory that I can solder to my A2620?

Thanks.
