Best way to install Delfina in Desktop 1200
« on: June 02, 2010, 03:38:03 PM »
I am going to move my main Amiga system to its old Desktop case and i am wondering about the best way to install a Delfina (http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=1270) into it. It just wont fit at all. :hammer:  Any suggestions?

Ofc it can fit. Without any modification to Delfina itself, you can mount it by gluing/sticking:
- under the ventilation holes (top case)
- horizontally inside the Amiga floating (of course while insulated - like the Subway)

With modification to Deflina itself (like removing the input/output headers/plugs alas making it thin like a carton paper...
- Almost everywhere

I haven't done it yet (since I kinda doubt I can fit it inside mine A1200 - lol - check signature) but I can test it on my spare A1200 and gief ya some pics if you want

@Vegas: What do you use your Delfina with? How's the quality?

It's a pity nobody took the free sources of Atari jpeg decoder and made a JPEG datatype. On slow cpus like 030 it should allow faster jpeg decoding...

If you have not spent money on it yet, the best solution might be to choose some other sound card.  I have a Flipper that has never worked (the software was never completed).

Is it a DSP thing, then?

One problem with the delfina is that the amount of memory on the device is limited. As is the bandwidth to it. I suppose some jpeg stuff could be offloaded, say processing a few blocks at a time (whatever will fit in the available memory) but you might end up trading CPU<->memory bound performance for CPU<->clockport bound performance.

I mounted one of these in my 1200 case - in the top left hand corner.  You'll need a longer clockport cable though or an extension.  I drilled 2 holes in the lower amiga case, ones that correspond to the holes in the delfina card.  The card sits nicely in the corner, and the lid will close without problems too.  And of course, the amiga RF shielding needs to be removed (just the top one).

Where the holes are in the case I used 2 stand offs. These were screwed in place from underneath. The snand offs had a screws length of thread on them, and also raised the card by about a 7mm.  This was enough to clear the rear left side of the amiga shield.  So the delfina sits nicely.  The holes in the delfina are slightly too large though, so I used some heat shrink tubing around the thread of the stand offs to make it a tighter fit (so as not to rattle).  You can also secure with tiny nuts if required (but be careful not to create a short circuit with the nuts).

i say depending on what type accelerator card used ( if any ) great care must be taken as the card is blocking some of the air vents.

That would be awesome. But i think there are some pics on the net already. A link would really do it for me :D Sweet Amigas by the way!!

Unfortunately i haven“t done much with it (yet!). I just had it for some days and mainly played back 16bit waves from an MPC (PCMCIA CF adapter turned out to be extremly handsome). The sound is great - at least for my needs ;)

Already got it. ;)

Thanks a lot for the detailed description!! This seems to be a reasonable solution. Also it will be easy to install the additional ins/outs. Maybe i will go for that.

There is a Blizzard 030 and it seems like there is no way to place anything near it.

Falcon used a 32Mhz 56001 while Delfina used a faster 56002 running up to 73Mhz.

The DSP has access to 96KB of local ram, I think it's enough to process the jpeg chunks. A 640x480 Ham8 screen just takes 300KB so there shouldn't be a bandwitch problem

I think A1200 Clockport can transfer 300KB/s without many problems, I think DSP may help with c2p and HAM8 conversion. With Zorro based Delfinas it would be even faster (let's say 1.8MB/s without choking the system)

I guess that using A1200 clockport a 060 may be faster but with slower cpus or ZorroII the DSP could win.

here's the link to the sources of Falcon030 JPEG Decoder (v0.81 1993):

These are the sources of the mp3Delfina player (perhaps some routines are more optimized for 56002):
