Best 16-bit WAV to 8-bit IFF audio converter?
« on: May 04, 2010, 06:51:09 AM »
Hi again,

Further to my other Amiga sampling question, just wondered if anyone could offer suggestions for a good (read, fast, simple and efficient) sample-converter that would be able to convert 16-bit WAV files (mono or stereo) into good old 8-bit IFF audio files?

Batch conversion facilities would be nice and I'm not fussed if it's a PC or Amiga-based utility...

Comments and suggestions greatly appreciated! :-)

Cheers,

Mike.

I've been using Goldwave Studio, though it is commercial.

http://www.goldwave.com/

I'm sure someone has a suggestion for free software, which I'd be interested in as well, so long as it is simple, can do batch conversion (like Goldwave), and feature rich.

Always been a big fan of sox.  You can find it on AmiNet.  It is command line and pretty powerful.

It could do batching with a little script-fu.  Though it may also work using wildcards and shell expansions, with the right shell I suppose --  I have never tried either

Always my problem with Sound Forge. Love the app, though.

Audio Thunder is great.  It's a GUI program, and probably has Arexx support for batch processing, but sox will do the job.

If you have a RIFF-WAV datatype installed, you can probably do it with multiview.

Thanks for the responses guys... Very useful!

@Cammy,

SoundBox! That's the one I used on my A1200 years ago... :-)

I might have another look at it.

Audio Thunder sounds interesting too!

Cheers,

Mike.

Sample Wrench from Dissidents!  Check it out!  Read the manual (it's great!)   (it's shareware now!  Suggested donation:  $20)

I don't work for the company, I just think the program is excellent... and very Amiga.

I use quite a few, but one that works and works well is SampleE from aminet: http://aminet.net/package/mus/edit/SampleE
This has the added advantage of being able to work with HUGE audio files (ie, larger files than your RAM capacity, without virtual memory)...hard disk size permitting of course. It's highly configurable too, you can save the position of each window. You can load/save .wav .aiff .iff or raw and all in 8bit/16bit and mono/stereo options.  It will also upsample or downsample and you can also apply some effects and fade in/out etc.

There's also SampleZ which is exactly the same program, but a slightly updated version.
