IDE-CF card reader question...
« on: April 16, 2010, 04:39:13 AM »
Hi,

I mentioned flash card (CF, SD, MMC, etc) readers in a previous thread, but now have another question.

Will a reader (such as the ones in the links below) allow me to use a CF card as an Amiga HDD (on an IDE-equipped Amiga) or can it only be used as a flash-card reader - in the same way as PCMCIA card-readers on the Amiga 1200?

http://store.compuapps.com/idecfflcare.html

http://store.compuapps.com/idmuflcare.html

I'd like to have one mounted on the front of my A4000 (in the spare floppy bay) and be able to 'swap' CF hard drives easily...

Comments and suggestions greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Mike.

CF cards are not HOT Swappable on the IDE chain, like they are on USB based readers.

[edit] (Links) I suspect they will not be HOT SWAP, you would need to power down before swapping.  Would it FIT in a 4000 ? Probably.  *BUT*... I could be wrong.

Hmm...

I get what you mean... I had a look around and some of them seems to support 'media change' in IDE (I guess like the old IDE LS-120 drives), so they should work - you probably have to 'eject' the card from Workbench...

I might get one to see how it goes...

Mike.

Hey, Mingle, you are in Melbourne.

Are you interested in coming along to MAUG ? (First Thursday of each month, Mooney Ponds).

It will work, but not hot-swappable, don't waste your time thinking otherwise. That's the same setup I have on my A600.
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply...

So if I understand correctly an IDE-CF card (or multi-card) reader on the A4000 IDE bus will not work in the same way as a CF card reader on the a600/1200 PCMCIA slot?

@whiteb,

Mooney Ponds is a bit far for me... If it was a bit closer to the SE suburbs, I might be in on it!

Cheers,

Mike.
