Two questions about A1200 and games
« on: December 12, 2002, 04:05:18 PM »
I'm considering buying an A1200 instead of an A500. This is because I realised I may want to connect them in a network or whatever. Or connect a HDD and do a little more serious (not really) work.

My questions are twofold:

1. Is it possible, if I get an Amiga Technologies version with the sometimes problematic floppy, to boot games from an external floppy drive instead? If so, how would I do this? Doesn't the Amiga have to recognize the external drive in some way before accessing it? With the A500 I have (which is now dead) I had to run WB for the computer to use the external drive. Can I boot a game from within WB?

2. I know some old games are hard to run on the A1200 without HD-installing them or using some degrader. My favorite games include Giana Sisters, IK+, Ports of Call, Bubble Booble and Defender of The Crown. Is anyone here running them successfully on their A1200? :-)

question 1: Not without modification to the external drive if my memory recalls. You can boot some games such as Robocod (as an example.)
from an icon within WB though.

as for question no. 2: I run IK+ sucessfully on my A1200. (remember to switch graphicmode to original in the boot options.) Even got it installed on my HD1.  The other games..well, Defender of the Crown I believe work but definitly not Bubble Bobble and Ports of Call. Giana Sisters I'm almost certain that it will work, never tried though.

One more question, just to be sure. As I've said I have a couple of external floppy drives for my A500. Will these work with all Amigas? More specially, will they work with an A1200? They are of that slimmed kind - here's a picture:

External floppy drives work with all amiga's with an external floppy interface.
So yes they will work on your A1200

I confirm what JurassicCamper said as I have the same external floppy drive connected to my A1200.
