Amiga with 3 CPUs?
« on: November 18, 2003, 02:53:15 AM »
Owning a CyberstormPPC Card with a 604e and a 68060 processor, would it be possible to use a third one (SharkPPC with Mediator) together with them under AmigaOS 4.x? I'd like the idea of doing the fast G3/G4 most of the work while coding mp3s in the background with the old PPC. Or calculating fractals or...?
Or is the speed gain of the biggest CPU so big that this makes no sense?

I really wouldn't have thought it was likely that you could do it (although I don't know for sure). Even if multiprocessing is in OS4, I doubt it would operate such a disparate combinationt. More than likely you will end up having to install it for just one of the PPC cards.

Possible yes, just like you could use the same PPC-based SharkPPC card in a non-PPC machine entirely.  (companies make these kinds of cards already)

Not much use from my viewpoint, but that is up to you.

O.K. the use of such an arrangement may not be so big; I see it mainly from an "Only Amiga makes it possible" point of view. :-)

You can use multiprocessor on A1/OS 4.0 4.1

But i think that on a classic machine you can't use it well. I think it is more efficient to have dual G4 on a Shark model for mediator that having a board with a PPC 603 (hack) plus a old 68k and a Shark on a Mediator :-)

I think that if you can programme it, then it would work.  :-)

....and, this is, of course, all pending on the mythical Shark PPC for Mediator actually materializing.  Correct me if I'm wrong...  But as I understand it, no one has actually seen one plugged in and functioning in any way, right?  Even Linux, or heck, just diagnostic codes on this beast would be a huge proof of concept.  One I've never seen...  Despite asking every so often...

Until then, I'd say the Shark must be classed as vaporware...  Which kind of ticks me off.  I want one.

Did anyone else think of the South Park genetic engineer when they saw this subject line? :-)
