Amiga 500 floppy drive from Vesalia doesn't fit
« on: November 18, 2009, 03:50:40 AM »
At the risk of kicking up a fuss about nothing I thought I'd ask here first.

This last week I ordered 2x Amiga 500 internal floppy drives from Vesalia. The drives arrived but are not the same as the original. Differences are:

1. They are fully enclosed units similar to the A1200 floppy drive.
2. The eject button doesn't line up with the 500 case.

Am I correct in assuming that they sent A1200 or A600 floppy drives that are just not compatible OR am I expected to do some modding to get them to fit? I can see part of a part number on one of the packets that reads 'FB-357'. The packet wasn't sealed though so I can't verify if the bag really does belong to the drive or not.

The only issue I can see or think of is that the Eject button is in the wrong place...too far 'in' by 3mm or so.

Any tips appreciated. I've sent an email to Vesalia but, as I'm in NZ, if they ask for them to be returned I'll start getting sorely out of pocket and 2 drives are going to start costing more than I really wanted to spend.

Thanks

Well all I can say is :madashell: Assuming this is correct what the hell are they doing selling these things? Completely misleading advertising.

What is even more interesting is that the drives have 2 silver warranty stickers that will show if you been inside the unit or not. One of them has the C= emblem and 'Commodore' written on it. If these are PC drives then the use of the Commodore logo is even more misleading.

I'll see what their response is and update this thread so that others can see what level of support they offer.

Vesalia responded and are sending out replacement buttons that should fix the alignment problem.

I'll update when they arrive.

When connected, do they read and write Amiga disks at least?

My question is, when connected, do the boot NDOS (Game) disks properly.
I seem to remember those are the ones that some of the PC floppies had trouble with.

Isn't this the drive that was used in the post-Commodore produced A1200s? A PC HD drive jumpered down to DD?

I also found a page that stated this drive was used in one of Commodores PC-systems, which I guess would explain why it has Commodore warranty seal stickers on it.
