Any major differences between motherboard versions???
« on: January 30, 2010, 04:09:48 PM »
I see that the Amiga 2000 has several motherboard versions (4.3, 6.2, etc.).  Other than physical differences, are the newer motherboard more compatible with software/hardware?  What is the big difference?

This may sound weird but I found that the AGA2000 FF looks much sharper in my old 4.3 motherboard than my 6.2.  I don't know why this is but it is very interesting.

There were some big differences with A2000. Germany built the first ones. Then Dave Haynie took over. His versions are awesome, naturally.

The German 4.0 rev is based on the A1000 chipset (DIL Agnus, OCS, 512 KB chip RAM, different CPU slot, no composite output). >=4.1 are from West Chester with the A500's chipset (PLCC Agnus, OCS or ECS, up to 1 MB chip RAM, standard CPU slot, composite video, Buster), rather minor differences.

That is very interresting.  One motherboard I have is a version 4.3 and I have yet to really see any difference at all besides the look.  In fact, I have had fewer problems with that board than my 6.2.

Rev 6 changed from the 512k Agnus to the 1 meg version, and changed from 256kx1 DRAM chips to 256kx4. I believe that's also when they put in fuses for the mouse & video ports.
