DKB Mega Chip
« on: November 06, 2009, 02:24:08 AM »
Hi all,

I spotted this Ebay ad for Mini Migi chip,

http://cgi.ebay.com/Mini-Mega-Chip-2MB-ram-Amiga-500-2000-CDTV-memory-PAL_W0QQitemZ150385720903QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item2303affe47

 it turns out to be a DKB Mega Chip in the photo.
One thing that confuses me is the seller says it is wired to a cpu chip and if you enlarge the photo what should be the Gary chip has MC68000p8 or perhaps the 8 is an s, I can't tell. Were some of these wired into the 68000 cpu instead of the Gary chip?

This leads me to my second question. Does any one know if this would work with Derringer 030 accelerator? The reason I ask is the Derringer plugs into the original 68000 cpu socket and then has a 68000 cpu socket that sits next to the 030. It gives you backward compatibility but you have to have the jumper set for it. I don't have a 68000 chip on my 030 so the jumper is set for that configuration.
 If some of the Mega chips were wired to 68000 and I plugged it into the Derringer, I am not sure the Mega Chip would work even if I moved the jumper to include the 68000. thanks

Yeah, it could be connected to either GARY or the 68000. You could easily use the GARY connection instead, if that would be easier for your setup.

A word of warning on these things.  The part that plugs into the Agnus chip is a little daughterboard that will probably interfere with you being able to plug the derringer back in.  I have one of the megi-mini boards and while it did indeed give my 500 2mb of chip RAM, I lost the ability to use my Spirit Memory board which plugs into the CPU slot like the derringer does. The version I have uses the gary chip for that extra wire (via an additional socket).

I will eventually take out the megi-mini board and put a 1mb Agnus in its place and have .5mb Chip, 2mb Fast but keep the ability to boot PAL.  I'm not sure what good 2mb of chip RAM is in a 500 anyway.

@Damion

Thanks that is good to know.

@Moto
 Right, I was concerned about these kind of issues. I have an A2000 but space under the Derringer still might be an problem. I hope it won't effect the ram or 030 because of address or other conflicts.

Do not forget that the auction is for an EU / PAL version of MegAChip 500/2000 and so is no good for USA/NTSC Amiga's. Not without changing the Agnus chip onboard.
