Samsung S3650...
« on: October 17, 2009, 04:23:23 PM »
Heh, managed to bugger my current phone (don't ask) and am in the market for a new one... Saw this in the vodafone shops window the other day and thought it looked ok.

But has anyone got one or played with one, I've read various online reviews and it looks about right for what I'm after but some first hand info would be great.

The genio is a bit of a (what I would consider) toy. Granted, it's small and feature packed but it's easily out-classed by the LG Cookie IMHO.

Get a Sony Ericsson w995.  Best mobile out there at the minute.  Don`t think you can get it on vodafone though.  (God knows why!)

You can get it on contract for free.  PAYG is about £400 though..

That's right on the edge of my price range and I have no experience with LG's handsets. Tbh whenever I've gone LG for other things I've ended up taking it back to store within 6 months, it could be bad luck or it could be that, at least on other things their build quality is crap.

Looking at the specs it sounds like there's only a gnats tadger between this and the tocco lite and for the exact same price.

I'll also say that CWH's listings for capabilities is off for the genio - the amount of onboard memory isn't correct, it is a quadband and it does do video.

In a shootout between the Tocco and the LG, I'd take the Tocco (Even if every time I mentioned it I got hungry) simply because I've had good experience with Samsungs in the past.

So from what I can see I'd be paying an extra £20 for a marginally better camera, regardless of if I went with the Tocco or the Cookie unless I'm missing something here (The genio comes with a "spare" black battery cover in the box for those not wanting the "toy" look). That's pretty hard to justify from my perspective.

I refuse on principle to go on contracts (on account of both times I have I've ended up getting ripped off most heinously). Also Sony Ericsson? Ewww. Even if it wasn't about 5 times over my budget... Just... No.

The ideal situation would be to have all the phones in front of you and mess with them for a while. Get a feel for the right phone for you so to speak.

Failing that, go with your gut instinct and have a Tocco - A good choice :)

I ended up getting the Tocco - the thing that swung it for me in the end was that it was nicer in the hands, more responsive and included a qwerty keyboard when you turned it on it's side.

Thankyou everyone who said to avoid the genio. I absolutely love it :D

Found the user interface far too busy, the texting system to be extremely clunky, the controls awkward, the phones themselves seem to have been designed by the same folk who used to do Volvos - ie with a set square.

I much prefer the samsungs (or the sagems for that matter since they use the same OS as the low end samsungs).

This touchwiz interface though... Very very elegant, clean, responsive and logical. Can't really fault it.

Gotta say, whilst having a full webkit based browser with flash is a huge step up from the openweb junk the e250 came with, i'm surprised this place doesn't have a mobile option. Though not as surprised as when I realised neither does /.  !!

Posting via the phone now.
