There are so many threads about which HW platform might be a candidate for this "ambitious project" that we may have already discussed the answer.
I haven't read them all, but as Tension says "brace yourselves for disappointment".

Taking into account that x86 has been ruled out, I decided to Google PPC on x86 and a number of PPC PCI/PCIe processor board hits were returned.
Does anyone here have an informed opinion as to whether this would be a viable option for getting OS onto "mainstream HW"?

fitting a FastATA mkIII

i posted some time ago how to fit a FastATA into a desktop A1200.

1. this is the best method

replace the flat pin socket on the A1200 motherboard with round pin socket, you will need just one socket riser if you have a Bvision. this gives the best contact across all pin at the roms socket. no modification needed to the keyboard.

2. if you use the old flat pin socket on the motherboard, you need to cut a hole in the back of the keyboard.

1.  gives the best performance as there is less chance ( if any ) of H/R. when using the flat pins i sometimes pick-up H/R and all sorts of other problems.
