Is there a psychologist in the house?

Talk to me like I'm a 5 year old...

What is it about us humans that makes us do stupid, counter-intuitive things?

Case in point: an ebay auction for some amiga gear with a starting bid of $60.

The auction has 5 days to go but some dope puts in the first bid...
I think to myself: well, the bidder has put in a sufficiently high bid that makes him/her feel they will not be outbid.
2nd day of listing rolls around and the first bidder is outbid, to my bewilderment the new listing price is only $8 more..

This means the first bidder put in a ridiculous amount for his/her highest bid!

My question Dr. is: was the first bidder deluded as to the value of the item, or did the first bidder just put in a bid for giggles?

1.What is the purpose of putting in a bid which will clearly be beaten ?
2.Why put in a bid on the first day?
3.Am I just getting judgemental in my old age?
"...but some animals are more equal than others."

Only wimps bid when there's more than 10 seconds left!
