Another simple question - I canne see the wood from the trees!
« on: November 08, 2003, 08:57:39 PM »
I've never had this problem before with my A1200s, its always been easy, but I've fitted a new HD to my toy A600... and I can see the drive, partition it, format the partitions, make one of them bootable and copy files to it, but when I try to boot the machine....nothing!

I can use FFS with KS 2 can't I?

I'm probably being really stupid, but I'd rather someone enlighten me so I can have a 'doh!' moment, rather than carry on tearing my hair out...

Thanks

Yes, sure you can.

You may try also the "c:install dh0: FFS". On hdtoolbox, save any changes to the drive, and leave the floppy "WB Install disk" write protection-off (write enabled) when saving the changes.

P.S. What size is the HD?

I've done what you mention (I'm booting with a WB2.04 disk and running HDTools off the WB3.1 Install disk in df1:)

The HD is an amazing 40MB in size!  :-o

(I want to sort it out and sell it, as I need the space!)

Could be that the HD-toolbox saves something 3.1-special to the HD.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

I've been using for my A600's 30MB HD, the "3.0 Install disk" from my A4000 without any problems. If you can find an older version than 3.1, might be better.

(I've installed the 3.1 OS after softkicking the A600! You can try to Softckick, and then install the RDB).

Does the hard drive boot up with a warm reset once it's been on for 20 or so seconds? Lots of older IDE drives don't spin up early enough to allow the Amiga to boot from them.
If I have military spec stuff listed on eBay, you can find it here  :-)

Maybe a silly remark of me, but doesn't OS2 have it's own HD Install disk?

When you formatted with Install 3.1, you didn't have Directory Caching set, did you? Maybe that could be the problem.

What's with leaving the protection off on the floppy disk?  Don't say "because it needs to write stuff", I want to know what and preferably why :-)

That may be - but despite having originals of WB1.3, 2, 3.0 and 3.1, I can only find the install disk for 3.1  :-(
