Please Help - Green Screen on my A500
« on: August 25, 2009, 02:31:50 AM »
Ok guys - My baby isn't working - lol.  It's been in the original box in the attic for about 5 years. I had a hankering for Star Control, Street Rods & Dungeon Master.  Plus, I recently purchased Amiga Forever, and wanted to make some disk images.  (not of the games, obviously - I can get all those - just the other 'stuff' I had done on my Amiga through the years)

Anyway - it boots up to the dreaded Green Screen.  The Battery was in the memory expansion, but it had not leaked at all.  Even removing that, it still boots to green with the blinking power light.  I pulled it all apart - and the board looks AMAZING.  Not one bit of corrosion anywhere.  Any of the chips that are able to be removed, I did, and reseated them.  Still Green.  I can't belive the board is shot - it worked when I put it away.  Not too mention, it looks great.  Anything else I can try?  They want $70 for a new board on eBay (That's a touch crazy.), and there's none locally on Craigslist.   Thanks in advance for your help!

Gently pry up all the socketed chips and re-seat them. Also, locate the square chip
called Agnus and press down on her. If this doesn't do the trick, you could try removing
her completely and reseating her, but I recommend you purchase a real PLCC chip
removal tool to do this. The tiny screwdriver method is risky because you'll probably
end up cracking the socket.

Let us know how it goes!

Do what Save2600 ask. The problem is in the Agnus chip.

Probably just some oxidizing due aging (5 years in the attic).

The A500 is the most returned-in-guaranty computer C= made. Most resellers just made one thing (away from the costumers, of course): lift the A500 about 20cm from the table and drop it flat. I don't recommend this method of fixing the machine, BTW!
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

That was the only chip I didn't mess with...

I tried today (briefly) with a small screwdriver, to no avail - Didn't try TOO hard - as I was afraid of breaking the chip.  Then tried poking it out the back side of the board with a plastic rod, again to no avail...I ordered the puller off ebay for $7 including shipping.  I'll pull it out and see what happens.  Let ya know....Thanks guys...
