How and where to learn programming the OS3.9?
« on: October 26, 2003, 07:56:04 PM »
Hello!

I have been programming on the PC a long time and now I want to try to program on my newly upgraded A1200 computer. But, where can I find information on how to program the Amiga? I mean like windows, buttons, listers and Workbench stuff like that?

Very thankful for any information on programming topics in C or C++ for the Amiga OS3.9.

I advice the AmigaDev CD. Contains docs and many example.

But, first, install an C compiler like VBCC.

By the way, programming under the OS 3.9 is (almost) the same than on 3.5, 3.1 or 3.0. Futhermore, it will not be very different on MorphOs either.

Bye

I have ordered the AmigaDev CD now. But it was very hard to find. But I found a copy at http://www.schatztruhe.de/indexe.html if someone else is interested, you never know :) . I have also ordered the Storm C 4 compiler from Haage & Partner.

What is VBCC? is it a free/shareware c-compiler?

Humm, as far as I heard, StormC V4 is not very good...
VBCC is a free (OpenSource, and you don't pay) C compiler for AmigaOS 68k, and MorphOS ...

Actually Storm C V3 is very good, and it comes with the Amiga DEV CD V2.1 :-)

Install that, and you will probably me amazed! It's what I use on my Amiga all the time. (I have it running now)

The Amiga DEV CD is probably the ultimate reference, however I would recommend(and it's not easy to do) that you find some books for Amiga programming, especialy the ARKRMs!

Oh, and somebody here has a beginners Amiga programming website that I highly reccomend. Check the links section.

I have tried the Storm C3 and now I have tried Storm C4 and I must say that I like Storm C4 better.

I have all(five) the ARKRM books but since they are outdated, the examples written in those books does not work. Anyway, I can´t get them to work.

I have now received my DEV CD V2.1 also, but there is so much info on that CD that I don´t know where to start reading. :)

I will certanly check out that website you are talking about anyway...

The CD only covers up to OS3.5, I would suggest downloading the free update with the OS3.9 includes and autodocs, but it appears to have disappeared from Amiga's website (anybody know why?)

There isn't much difference between the two anyway.
