What to put where?
« on: July 02, 2009, 08:29:29 PM »
Hello,

So here comes a question for which there can be many different answers. However I have to ask it because I do not know how I am going to build up my setup.

Basically how is your workbench installation organised?

From what I saw so far it seems that people install workbench in a partition named "System". However for what is the "Work" partition used? Where are programs and games installed? Two oter different partitions? And where do I save my personal files?

Thanks for any answers.

Regards,
Sim085

Organise it in whatever way is logical and easy for you. Personally, I like to have a Workbench partition for the system installation, and then a Work partition which contains software, games, data etc (basically, everything but the OS). I believe this is the traditional way to configure the system, but as long as you don't exceed the partition size limits for your OS, filesystem and device, you can organise things however you like.

But for example if I install WordsWorth under the Work partition then where would you save the documents created with this program?

I am asking these type of questions because I am now used to Microsoft Windows. On this OS I know that programs should be installed under C:\Program Files and games undder C:\Games, and documents under 'My Documents'.

... however on workbench I do not know where things go!!

You can either save the files in to the programme directory (so install Wordworth in Work:Apps/Wordworth and put your documents in the same directory) or if you prefer all of your documents to be in the same place, you could create a kind of "My Documents" equivalent under the Work partition (Work:docs for example) and put all your documents in there, or you could even create a whole new partition just for your documents.

It really doesn't make any difference to be honest. As long as you know where to find them when you need them, you can put your files wherever you want - Workbench won't mind :)

Thanks for the reply. Just something else. The desktop (I think in Amiga this is called workbench as well?) only displayed partitions up to 3.1 right? or it can also display program icons?

It can display any icon. If you locate the icon on the disk, then choose the "leave out" menu option, then the icon will move from the directory on to the Workbench. IIRC, this option has been available since Workbench 2.x. You then have to chose the "Snapshot... All" menu option to make the icon stay there after you reboot.

You can "leave out" any file that has an icon on the desktop. For example, you can go into your Workbench:System drawer, click once on the "Shell" icon to select it, let go and then hold the right mouse button to get the menu up. In the "Icons" menu, you should be able to see a "Leave Out" option. If you choose that, it will leave your Shell icon on the Workbench screen. In reality, nothing is actually moved (workbench keeps a file in the root of each disk partition called .backdrop that contains a list of left out files).

If you want to put the icon away again, you can just select it again and choose "Put Away" from the "Icons" menu.

You can do this for any file that has an icon.

If you change the name of the partition after you have installed several programs, you would have to go into the user-startup sequence and fix all the path assigns or your system will become confused. Best to leave the WORK partition named as such and install all the apps there. Some programs install a long list of assigns, such as the Video Toaster software.
