Easily upgrade 040 to 060 via adapter?!?
« on: October 07, 2003, 07:44:07 AM »
Check this out:

http://www.emulation.com/catalog/off-the-shelf_solutions/production-test_adapters/upgrade_motorola/

It's an interesting adapter which allows easy
conversion from 68040 to 68060...the voltage
regulation etc. are all done onboard the adapter.

Too bad it's $300 (but maybe the price is
outdated?), otherwise it could be an easy upgrade
option for some '040 turbocards.

It also makes mention of a "68040V", apparently
a 3.3v '040.

Compatibility Issues:

For your system board to be compatible with the S68060-2, a few conditions need to be met. The skew between leading edges of the BCLK and PCLK signals should be no more than 1ns, and the 68060 should not have to perform bus snooping.

You'll need an additional ROM chip to patch the kickstart.. The OS won't boot on the 060.

Should work on '040 accellerator cards, provided
the proper libraries are installed..

According to the sales pitch it is truly an 040 to 060 voltage converter and thus should work.
And the patch that is provided by motorola is basically the same as our own oxypatch.
Only the price is RIDICULOUS!!! That doesn't even include the 060 itself!
Okay. I'm really attached to my warp-engine and it's marvelous ram speed and would like to
see it run with an 060! But $300 for a mere voltage converter!?!? I don't think so! I can get a cyberstorm for that money! Complete WITH 060!

Perhaps an adventurous hardware developer like Individual Computers can help us with a cheap alternative!?

Won't the '060 libs work?
