UK Mag Micromart Votes Amiga Best
« on: May 08, 2003, 04:22:23 AM »
Readers of UK magazine MicroMart have voted the Amiga the favourite home computer of all time!

From their e-mail newsletter:

"IT'S THE AMIGA!

After months of voting, we can now confirm that the Amiga has won out as
your favourite home computer of all time. In the final with the Spectrum,
the Amiga led from the off, although towards the end the Spectrum really
made inroads and closed the gap. The final results? 55% of you voted
Amiga, 45% voted Spectrum. We can thus officially proclaim the Amiga the
winner!"

but, like drunk men, know not the road home.\\" -- BOETHIUS

Shame that no one in the market is producing computers like the Amiga anymore.

I mean, a PC running WindowsXP is just not the same thing is it? :-D And Macs are way to expensive.. $1500 Canadian$ for any entry level eMac.. No way!!! :-D

No this market needs another low cost entry level computer. One you just plug-in and works out of the box!

Pegasos might be our best option in this way. Any more suggestions?

Well, I don't think low cost applies to all of them, but there are a number of new machines in the "spirit" of the Amiga (ie computers that are fun to tinker with, and provide an alternative platform to the mainstream), including Pegasos, AmigaONE (once OS4 is out, anyway), Commodore One, the new RiscOS machines, and the new Atari-compatibles,

The poor ols speccy didn't stand a chance, It was only really regarded as a games machine- whereas the amiga was (in my opinion) the first proper all round multimedia machine. Oh and micromart has it's own amiga column, which means many of the faithfull read it and voted.

One of the posters was quite correct when he said there aren't computers being made any more for the same market that the Amiga left. M$ may have a PC running windows in almost every home in the west, but I can't honestly say that I'd call a PC a home computer. Its more like your work computer gone walkies.

The thing that makes me laugh is that after over 10 years out of the scene theres still a massive market for a true home computer yet M$ have yet to truly work out what a home computer is.  A possible way back into the limelight? Perhaps, but there are other contenders out there who are realising the same thing: Yellowtab (the people who are making BeOS R6 - Zeta) are taloring their own offering to just this sort of market, with a lightweight easy to use OS thats as solid as a rock. Couple this with say a Transmeta based STB and you'd have a very tempting combination there. Ok it wouldn't be uber fast, but unless you're playing UT or games of that size who needs it?

Will Amiga do it? Only if they can sit down with all the various "factions" and try to get along. The current usergroup situation does little for whats left of their image.
Blessed Be,

Amiga is the best one! No matter what! Thanks readers of MicroMart. Thanks for atleast taking a bit constructive and good reports on Amiga. The first ever magazine, outside the Amiga ones to really do so.

Those other magazines simply ignore Amiga for what it is, and does not even take our beloved Amiga into history articles.

Keep going on! I love Amiga magazines covering all platforms with a sense and good writers.
