AWeb Open Source project website: Lightning Strikes Again
« on: August 22, 2002, 07:49:44 PM »
21.8.2002 Sunsite.dk had suffered from another damage from lightning on August 20th, which caused two harddisks to die. This forced them to shutdown some services (project websites and ftp), but backups have been restored and they are running again.

Yeesh it sounds like you live here in South Florida, the lightning capital of the world! Lightning causes me all kinds of headaches at work, you have no idea.... :-x
Someone has to state the obvious and that someone is me!

Sounds like their computers need a AVR-UPS or at very least a surge protector. I have the latter, and in the event of a lightning strike it would close the circuit in a picosecond to prevent any damage. Most UPS setups do the same. These don't cost much, certainly cheaper than replacing frazzled hardware all the time.

And maybe a lightning conductor on the building wouldn't hurt either? ;-)

IIRC they do have UPS (I remember reading about it on
some ann.lu thread during the first outage).

AFAIK with some bad luck lighting can still hose your
system, even if you have surge protector or UPS.

They must have very bad luck indeed, unless the lightning energy zapped into their computer through some unfiltered source, such as an ethernet cable, or as a sideflash from one of the walls (in which case their earth should have protected them). I think their UPS should have protected them. Even the casing earth is protected on a good UPS box. Maybe they can claim on that connected hardware guarantee that comes with most UPS :-)

Anyway, whatever happened - they have to fix it real soon, or the next thunderstorm will just zap them all over again.

My A4000 which still is alive and kicking has been hit four (4) times by lightning. The modems turned to dust but the miggy still keeps going.. just like it does despite all the companies going bankrupcy in the miggy-world.

I had to chuckle at this. Sorry for the guys who lost the drives and
everything on them though. But wow, one strike is rare enough and they
are hit with 2!? It almost seems like mother nature herself is trying
to kill Amiga these days dosent it? :)
