Sendo Announces Tao Java(TM) Technology for Smartphones
« on: March 26, 2002, 07:49:30 PM »
Sendo has licensed Tao Group's intent(R) multimedia Java platform to be available on the Z100 Multimedia Smartphone, which uses Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Powered Smartphone 2002 software. This agreement further expands the extensive range of possibilities for developers to offer wireless data services and solutions.

Network operators are looking at Java(TM) technology to differentiate their services and offer personalised applications to their customers, such as games. Now, Sendo can offer wireless developers the opportunity
to write applications for the Z100 Smartphone. The application can be made available to consumers either by including it on the phone or by making it directly downloadable to their phones, depending on the security controls of their operator.

Tao's intent application runtime environment is compliant with Sun's J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition) specification for a mobile phone
Java environment. The intent system provides a fast Virtual Machine fully compatible with Sun's KVM (Kilobyte Virtual Machine) specification. Full support is also provided for Sun's CLDC and MIDP specifications, which enhance the KVM to provide mobile phone specific features, such as standard user interface, persistent storage and
networking. Tao's Java system includes an enhanced high-performance graphics library to allow Z100 specific Java applications to take
advantage of the Sendo handset's large TFT colour display screen and fast graphics processing capability.

Francis Charig, Executive Chairman of Tao Group said, "Tao's intent Java technology gives Sendo and its customers a platform on which they can
innovate and differentiate, creating an open environment, which enables the development and deployment of wireless services for both 2G and 3G." Charig continued, "Sendo is leading the market in providing flexibility for its customers in terms of both customised hardware and features. Tao's Java will allow this flexibility to be extended to the users of
the Z100."

"The global adoption of Java technology-enabled handsets by Mobile Operators has attracted content developers for wireless devices such as entertainment, media, and enterprise access," said Hugh Brogan, CEO of
Sendo. "This agreement emphasises Sendo's core commitment to offer operators and consumers mobile devices and services, which are flexible and have a high level of personalisation."

Sendo Z100

The Sendo Z100 Multimedia Smartphone is the smallest (99cc) and lightest (99 grams) GPRS tri-band Smartphone. It features an impressive
65,000-colour TFT display, comparable in quality to a high-end laptop display. The Z100 includes USB, IrDA and RS-232 connectivity and it will
be able to include hot-pluggable Multimedia Card (MMC) and Secure Digital (SD) memory. In addition it has HTML, c-HTML and WAP browsers. The Z100 will be the first colour Smartphone that includes advanced mobile Internet and personal information management (PIM) functionality, giving users access to e-mail, contacts and meaningful Internet content,
any time, any place. Naturally, other features like voice command and control and a wide range of accessories will be offered.
