Repairing dead A2000
« on: January 24, 2009, 10:29:27 PM »
Hi,

I probably should finish one project before starting another, like fixing my A501.

However, I have a A2000 no video, just light/dark grey screen.

What i've done:

a. Replaced all socketed chips
b. All voltages good @ mobo and on socketed chips.
c. Voltages good on all ports (video, mouse, etc.)
d. Power LED lights.
e. Removed battery (slight leak damaged fixed and checked.)
f. Different jumper settings tried.
g. Tried both RGB and Composite video = nothing

What now? I'm stumped...... :boohoo:

Only progess so far... if you want to call it that. :-)

Usually boots to grey screen but I power on-off-on a couple of times it occasionally sticks on a red (pinkish actually) or white screen.

I've tested 1084s & RGB cable with a A500 so I know that it is ok.

Thanks...........

@Sandman,

Hi. Try giving each socketed chip, especially the ROM and Agnus a centered but gentile push with your thumb. They can work loose and get a little oxidation on the pins. You probably knew that already.

You'll get it going but you may need a few capacitors. Have fun.

Well, it always makes your life much easier if you have a working A2000 in order to find out what is wrong with your non-working A2000, by switching out chips (carefully) etc.
Otherwise you're kinda going to be in the dark.  -Dave

Those A2000s went very bad for me in history, too. I bought a lot of them. None of them was working, mostly it was a problem with leaking batteries. But as I'm not so good in fixing those problems I bought and bought and bought 2000s...stupid, I know. Now I have 10+ Amiga 2000, at least I found one working one.

I should learn more about the repairs I guess...but probably I'm the worst guy in soldering on this planet

I don't know if this will help .. problems I've had ....

Check the socketed chips for coreosion.........
Actually, check ALL chips for corrosion.

I've also had an A2000 that had one of the contacts in
one of the Zorro slots bent and making contact with the
contact on the other side of the slot causing it to not
boot..... (I don't remember what color screens I got).

Probly not much help .. but worth a look.

Sell them :-)
There are actually people out there that buy non-working Amiga's, fix them and then sell then again or keep them for own use :-)
It sure is better that stacking up at home, I know that problem myself
