pls explain the diff between a3000 and a4000
« on: December 21, 2008, 10:27:31 PM »
Dear Amigans:

Pls explain to me the difference between the amiga 3000 and the a4000. I am thinking about buying one. I would like to know how good the a3000 is, as that is the system I am more likely to want. I am thinking about getting an a3000. I do not need the video toaster/flyer, so the a3000 is prob good enough for me. I would like to get an a3000 and upgrade it to the max. All I really need to go with the system is: an 060 accelerator to speed up my aladdin 4d renders, a gfx card like opalvision, a cd drive, and a card to upgrade the memory. Is the a3000 good enough for this?  would the a4000 be better and what is the difference ?  Pls explain to me the pros and cons of both amiga systems. I do not need video toaster, but I would like to get a nice gfx card. This system is not for commercial work, only for hobby. Thank you!!!

Friends:

Thanks for posting the links, it explain that some a3000's will not work with the 040 and 060 accelerators. SO now I do not care anymore for the a3000, i will just save my money for an amiga 4000. Thanks !!!

@rednova

Why not use WinUAE on a <5 year old Windows PC.  Upgrading an A3000/A4000 these days is horribly expensive, and the WinUAE will run circles around even the fastest Amiga renders.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

I think you've made a good decision.  I have an A2000, A3000 and A4000.  In all honesty, the only advantage the A3000 has is the built-in scan doubler.

I just stick to my A4000 now and I added a 64MB 68040/40 card to replace the original 68040/25 (plus an extra 18MB on the motherboard).

With the A4000 I had a high density floppy and room to add an internal CD ROM (have fun trying to fit an internal CD ROM in an A3000).

I don't know how much you're planning on spending, but I recommend the following:

Scan Doubler (either internal or external - I have an internal)
Deneb USB 2.0 card - unleash the potential and use this to add an Ethernet dongle and to read memory sticks.
Zorro SCSI card - I added an Elbox Flyer and attached the DVD ROM and 2 x 80GB Hard Drives.  The internal IDE header is still available, but is unused.

I've also crammed in a Cybervision 64/3D card mainly for surfing the Net and an Emplant board for Mac Emulation which I haven't set up yet.
A2000, A3000, 2 x A1200T, A1200, A4000Tower & Mediator, CD32, VIC-20, C64, C128, C128D, PET 8032, Minimig & ARM, C-One, FPGA Arcade... and AmigaOne X1000.

You are right !!!  I do have amiga forever, and it renders my aladdin 4d on winUAE super fast !!! 1 sec a frame with the toughest renders !!! mega mega faster than amiga !!!
I just thought I would like to have a faster amiga, but now that you mention this, I guess I rather take your advice. Thank you for your advice !!!

Yes I was going to suggest this as well. I have an A4000 060, Cybervision 64, scan doubler, basically what you are aspiring to, and i no longer use it to do CPU-intensive stuff like 3d rendering or image processing as WinUAE is so much faster (and cheaper for you).  And the results are every bit as good.

If you are rendering 3d animations Lightwave works much faster on Winuae than it ever did on a real Amiga, and Winuae lets you save the output as an mpeg, or if you want you can copy your animation onto a compact flash card and play it off an A1200 straight into a TV or good old videotape.

Unfortunately these days I-well actually my 12 year old son-use my A1200 '020 with 8 meg ram more than my A4000, mainly for games, Scala, PPaint, Dpaint, Brilliance and Image Studio.  CPU intensive stuff is done on the PC with WinUae

Better to get a PC application that does the samething if that's all you are interested in.  PC application will avoid the translation layer and any other sacrifices emulation must make.  He's misleading you of course as emulator is not a complete Amiga, but if you are only interested in rendering frames many PC apps will do the job better than an emulated software.
