Amiga, RDP, ICA, WinBridges, VNC
« on: August 31, 2003, 07:16:12 PM »
Hello
There are several software that enable Linux
client to run Windows software: ICA (Citrix),
RDP (MS Windows), WinBridges (GraphOn). Also
MS Windows client can run X-Window using VNC.
Is it possible to run MS Windows or Linux apps
on top of AmigaOne / Pegasos client connected
to a RDP/ICA/Winbridges server or VNC server?
Is it possible to run X86 applications on top
of PowerPC machine using the above client?
Thank's.

I imagine VNC will get ported to PPC-based Amiga OS's at some point soon.

Uh, VNC is more for remote control really.  You'd be better of comparing an X-Windows server/client like Hummingbird's eXceed or StarNet's X-Win32.

There is a MorphOS native version of the VNC viewer, but not the client as far as I know.

There is VNC client and server software for the Amiga, which should run on OS4 (emulated).  But it is an old version and has bugs.

There is no Windows Remote Desktop client for The Amiga to connect to Windows machines (that would be very cool, though, but I doubt it will ever happen).

That is one thing that we really do need desperately.  Is more up-to-date software.  VNC is just one program I'd like to see updated and properly supported on Amiga.  Without good software OS4 won't be fun to use for very long.  I really do hope that once OS4 is here the software will follow...

mmmmmm well... yeah... kinda...

what you have to remember, is that linux (well, most ports) are running on x86 hardware which is what windows was built for, so emulating the sytstem resources needed by a host OS for windows isn't too tricky.

what you need really, is a PC emulator. this will allow you to run PC apps in a windows desktop in a  workbench window.

BUT

horribly horribly slow as the amiga has to emulate all the timings, buses, IRQ's, DMA's... basicly the hardware which windows expects to be there. so guzzels lots (in amiga terms) and lots of memory and hard disk space. it has been known that someone has run Win95 on an amiga. but if they did anything usefull with it i don't really know.
i did manage to install dos 6.2, win3.11, and office on a A4000/030 but was only really usefull enuff to show the windows clock....aaaaand watch it redraw.... and again... and again....

maybe a PPC version? just for a laugh? please?

A500, A600, A1200x3, A2000, A3000, A4000 & a CD32.
and probably just like the rest of you, crates full of related "treasure" for the above XD

I think that's what the original poster is referring to - RDP for Windows is Remote Desktop Protocol, what Terminal Services uses.
