AmiWest 2008: anyone interested in replacing their SMD caps for A4000, A1200, A600, CD32, A3640?

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of doing a community service thingy here:

I'll replace your SMD caps for the above boards (or any other device with SMD caps for that matter) for free if you want to bring it/them along at AmiWest.

However, since it's a major pain in the ass (I just finished an A600 not too long ago - not fun), there are a couple of gotchas:

1) I need to know how many people want this done, so I can see how much work there is, because I'm human after all and I'd also like to enjoy the show. So let me know if there's interest and how many Amigas.

2) You need to tell me ahead of time so I can buy the replacement caps, which I'll need to have you pre-pay, obviously. I have a good source with good prices, probably better than any other. We have two options: el-cheapo (similar SMD or typical electrolytics) or high quality Tantalum caps. I prefer the 2nd, and don't think they're that expensive. I think an A4000 kit (replacing ALL SMD caps) will be in the $20 range (but I'll have to do the math to give an exact figure, so let me know).

One other thing: not all caps might need to be replaced. In other words if there's too much demand or you want to save money, I'll only replace those that WILL die for sure (A3640 caps and sound circuit and RAM circuit caps).

PS. Caps = capacitors. Read the forums for all the bad things that can happen if they fail/die/leak, if you're not sure about what this is all about.

I have three A3640s. I will bring them to AmiWest and have you do a visual inspection of the units, then arrange to have the repairs, if needed, done at a later date. If that's okay with you?

Anyway is it possible to give a list of what parts you need for the A3640, A4000, A1200 and CD32 that way i know what Tantalum caps to buy please.

Not up to dismantling the A4000D VT/Flyer set-up. I do have an A4000 motherboard to bring that has battery damage. The MB funtions except for the RTC. Need a power supply though... Will this help?

Anyone with an extra A4000 power supply?  :-?

Not all models have the same number of components (ex. different A1200s seem to have different counts based on photos that I've seen). So, the best way to find out is to just open'em up and check :-)

However, I'll post my list for the ones that I've seen (along with the revision of the board). Also, if you can't find parts for cheap, let me know.

I'll bring an A4k PSU if you don't have a spare laying outside a case.

I assume we'll easily find a CRT and video cable there (based on previous experience).

I don't want my 4000 recapping at the moment, but I want to do it at some point. For the benefit of all people in our situation, though, would it be possible to post a parts list of what's needed? You must have the lists or you wouldn't know what to order for each machine!

It'd be much appreciated, then I can order stuff myself and do it in my own time.

Seriously, the easiest way is to just look in your Amiga, but here are the parts lists I used, and as I said before, different models might have different number of parts.


A600 (rev. 2B motherboard)
4x 10uF @ 35volts
5x 22uF @ 35volts (I've also seen 16volt parts used)
2x 47uF @ 16volts
4x 100uF @ 6volts


A1200 (rev. 1D motherboard)
3x 10uF @ 35volts
5x 22uF @ 35volts (I've also seen 16volt parts used)
2x 47uF @ 16volts
4x 100uF @ 6volts


A3640 (rev. 3.1)
5x 22uF @ 16volts


A4000D (rev. B motherboard)
2x 4.7uF @ 35volts
1x 10uF @ 35volts
5x 22uF @ 16volts
10x 47uF @ 16volts
1x 100uF @ 6volts


A4000T (rev. 4 motherboard)
3x 4.7uF @ 35volts
2x 10uF @ 35volts
4x 22uF @ 16volts
11x 47uF @ 16volts
7x 100uF @ 6volts

A4000T Disk module
3x 4.7uF @ 25volts

A4000T AV module
3x 4.7uF @ 35volts
1x 10uF @ 25volts
2x 22uF @ 16volts
3x 47uF @ 16volts
4x 100uF @ 6volts

A4000T Ports module
5x 4.7uF @ 25volts


As always, you can get a 35volt part in place of a 16volt or 10volt or 6volt, etc. In other words, higher doesn't hurt. Lower hurts. Although as I mentioned before I've used 16volts instead of 22uF @ 35volts and so far so good :-)  As far as I know the audio circuitry will top out at 12volts, so it should be fine.
