Reading Microsoft DMF floppies on Amiga using CrossDOS
« on: September 27, 2008, 04:00:57 PM »
I'm setting up a massive conversion process for a customer who has presented me with four boxes of disks covering various formats of 5.25" and 3.5" (SS/SD to HD.)  To do this I decided I would set up my 2000 with HD and DD floppy drives, as well as a 1020 and a 5.25" which I *believe* can read HD 5.25 (1.2MB).

In the boxes I found several original Microsoft DMF (distribution media format) 1.7MB floppies with Windows and Office software.  Would the Amiga read them?  My OS3.9 1200 has a HD floppy in it, so I fired it up, threw in a floppy, and sure enough, pc0: shows a 1680k floppy 100% full, and the cab file on the floppy copied to RAM: with no problem.

A quick search did not turn up any information on Amiga and DMF, so I thought I'd make a quick post about it.  Yes, the Amiga can read a DMF formatted floppy with CrossDOS.

The Amiga can't read 1.2 MB 5.25" disks. You'd need a Catweazle for that, or just use a PeeCee.

That sucks.  I may have to use a PC for those floppies, but I'm still on for the other formats.  I want to be able to script the whole process and take advantage of the disk change notification so I don't have to interact with the machine, just swap floppies.  Being able to do four disks at a time would be a considerable plus.
