Problems with A4000T - No Video Output
« on: September 18, 2008, 05:42:03 PM »
I am having problems with an A4000T that I just received in the mail.  It got bounced around pretty good even though it was packaged pretty good.  It looks like it got dropped as the front bottom of the tower was bent in maybe 3/4 of an inch.  This was enough to spring the cards in the tower (Toaster, Flyer, 1 more).  The accelerator had also come loose and was loose in the case.  I put it in another computer and it is fine, thank goodness.  I say that because it ended up being a 060@66 card which I didn't know when buying the computer.  I'm sure the computer worked when shipped because I trust the guy and there were photos of it working.  I cannot get any video out of the computer.  Nothing.  No flickering, no nothing.  Completely dead.  The rest of the computer seems ok as you can hear the HD load, load a disk, reset it from the keyboard and everything sounds OK.  I replaced the little video card that plugs into the motherboard that you plug your monitor into and it made no difference.  I plugged a Picasso IV in and I also got nothing out of it.  The motherboard looks fine physically.  I don't see anything obvious that is broke.  Right now I have the computer stripped down to just the floppy hooked up and nothing else.  No cards, etc.  Still nothing.  Does anyone have an idea what is wrong or what area of the computer and motherboard I should look?  What chip might it be?  Any help at all would be appreciated.  I'll hate to have to send it away to have fixed because with shipping you are already talking $200 plus for the repair.  HELP!!!

Sorry to hear about your miggy. Who was the shipper, was there any insurance that might pay for a repair? If it took as good a beating as you describe, there are endless connections that could have been damaged. You say the cpu card was loose when you received it? A jolt hard enough to knock that out could damage the cpu slot. Make sure that any socketed chips are in tight.

I've seen mother boards take hard shots that crack them around the mounting screws. Some times that kind of damage is hard to see. If you're comfortable with taking things apart, I would take out the mother board, get a bight work light, and closely go over the motherboard and all of it's connectors very closely looking for broken solder, cracks, and bent pins. If you had the cpu card flying around loose it could have hit some thing hard enough to cause trouble. Look it over very well front and back.

If you have to send it off, leave it striped down as much as possible to save on more shipping cost.

The other thing is:

1) take the mobo out of the cse, inspect the underside, look for items trapped underneath.
2) bare testing of the A4000T MUST have the disk module in, or no boot at all
3) What country was the seller and what country are you in?

Look, I'm sorry, but I can't offer anything constructive except to say that GOOD is an ADJECTIVE, and WELL is an ADVERB. They are different words. Please do not confuse them :-P

Make sure everything is seated correctly.  Not too long ago I had moved my shop around, relocating various computers and my A4T was one of them.  I later turned in on to find nothing working.  Opened her up and pushed everything in, and pushed the power button and on she came.

Press down onthe two motherboard riser cards on the back panel, the audio/video riser and I think the other one is the SCSI riser. I have to mess with the A/V riser every time I open the case on mine as it comes loose rather easily. Consider hot glue to hold it better...
