AfaOS installation. Help needed! - "slow" system
« on: August 22, 2008, 09:31:57 PM »
I just downloaded AfaOS (last) and installed it.

I have new/clean installation of OS3.9 with BB1.

I putted c:morelibspace (very beginning of SS) and c:afa_OS_Loader (just after the adddatatypes).

Afa is not working, no selection of the skins. Nothing. I can run preference but looks like nothing is working.

What exactly is needed to run to patch? Some newer libraries etc.

Someone who installed I really need to know exactly what to do. Manual explains everything...but is way to general to get that...

Did you do the checks in the manual to see whether morelibspace is working? I can't remember exactly now, but I think you have to check the stack for icon.library.

Check
C:Morelibspace REBOOT

This is used though when you use WB3.1 but with my old Apollo 1260 I couldn't get OS3.9 to work with AfA OS without the REBOOT parameter. Now with CSPPC and BPPC C:Morelibspace is enough :)

If nothing happens also, check if AfAOS libs are in an Assign path. Don't worry we'll make it work, just keep us informed and we will work this out :)

uff... I installed :).

The problem was LACK of Picasso96  :-D , and than problem with SetPatch. I needed to put the c:morelibspace at the very beginning of StartupSequence

In general, clean installation of OS3.9 + BB1 and BB2 and AFAOS4.2. Works GREAT. Somehow "slow" on 040 + Voodoo but acceptable ;)

Soon my first pictures

Thanks everyone for help!

Slow in what way?
Amiga 4000, Warp Engine 040/40MHz, CV643D with scan doubler module, Tocatta soundcard, Deneb, 72Meg fast ram, 18 gig scsi hard drive.

Opening windows, scrolling etc, is really slow. MagicManu is almost unusable... :(

I tried some PNG icons, but this is just a loooooooooong delay, even when I have like 20 icons in windows. The Glowicons are VERY fast in comparison... I use only 4xEIDE so maybe this is reason (

Is it normal for 040 and Voodoo :D?

I can live with that, but...

Now I have trouble with Zune, I mean I installed it and it's working :), but I don't know how to "load" predefined preferences, since setting everything by hand   .

I see the catalog with these predefined settings but I can get any access to them from ZUNE itself (can you imagine it's working ;) ).

BTW. Where I can find nice Amiga PNG icons, not the one from Linux?

Ok, time for some update.

This slowdown... this is not a "slow" Amiga problem.

After couple of days of starting computers (and not installing anything) I see something like that:

- mouse pointer is stopping, and moving only when the floopy "makes a click" it's not a joke. I assume that something is taking like 100% of processor time???

- system can hung up during loading a workbench start- up (random programs, not any particular).

- sometimes loading of background picture take like 40s instead of... 3s.

- once for a while the mouse cursor is "jumping" on the screen for about 2 min, and than normal "operation" of computer is possible.

When I use a "black" installation of OS3.1 or OS3.9 none of this stuff happened.

When I turn on computer it stopping booting (once for a while), a will start after reset.

 :pissed:

I think I will go back to Birdie, VisualPrefs :(. I was thinking that this is "slow" Amiga but now I see there is "software" problem. HELP!!!

Well seeing AfAOS for some months I must say it's really cool but it's not so fast comparing to normal windows even in 060.
Especially if you put Antialiased fonts and full PNG icons in every icon!
I don't think that 040 is such a power monsta for AfAOS. Not that is not running though. Dunno if it's because of 040, the 32MB of RAM or maybe a not enough PSU (the thing with the drive clicking and mouse freezing on the click shows that maybe something wrong with the power supply).
Other reason could be the not efficient cooling. Voodoo3 for example gets hot as hell even with the default heatsink. Checking whether your system has enough power supply (especially the 5V voltage) and if the cooling of hot surfaces get efficiently controlled is a nice start.
Have you also tried an AntiClick program for the floppy to check whether it freezes the mouse without the Click performing?
I'm not an hardware expert so my ideas could be silly, but  people with more experience in hardware troubleshooting may help ya out.
I haven't ever used Birdie+Visual prefs. I was either plain WB or AfAOS :D

The biggest problem is the dual png icons, i played around with amikit on an a4k, worked alot with it while my 060 was in france, trying to get it running ok on an 030@25. What i did with the icons in the end was to copy them all somewhere, move them to my linux box, and touch them with imagemagick, this removed the second png layer reducing the size of the icon by 50-75% depending on what compression i used. Now, this posed all sorts of problems, all the info in the .info (duh) was lost but amikit was aaaaaaaaaaaalmost usable

As for visual prefs, or birdie, i removed one or the other and got an, odd but coolish looking result.

I since gave up on amikit and os3.9 in its entirety..

As far as the slowdown went, i think its some library

Actually today it's 48Mb, when system finish booting I have like 30Mb free, so AFAOS is not taking "much".

or maybe a not enough PSU

350ATX should be enough :)

(the thing with the drive clicking and mouse freezing on the click shows that maybe something wrong with the power supply).

Actually it's exactly opposite (again it's not a joke!). I can move the mouse only when I hear "the click" think. I know sound stupid...

Really this is not an issue. Amiga is working fine, like I wrote, when Amiga has installed o plain WB is not problem.

I think there have to be some "patch" is system itself which is causing this "hung up's", slowing down the system.

About stability "test" I can play mp3 in max possible setting for 10 hours and no trouble. (BTW. Paula has great "voice" :D)
