Leaking Battery

Hi,

I know there are 100's of post on the leaking battery problem. In some of these I read that I could replace the leaking battery in my A500+ with a  lithium battery. However a lithium battery needs some type of place holder. In one of these posts I read that I could actually strip the lithium battery place holder from a PC motherboard (a motherboard which does not work) and install this on the A500+ motherboard.

My question is; does it make a difference from which motherboard I take this lithium battery place holder?

Also is just a question of getting it off from the PC motherboard and put on the A500+ motherboard? or there is more to it?

It sould be pretty straight forward, you got a positive and negative when soldering it on. All battery holders should be the same on any motherboard that has a coin battery older (PP3 I think they call them) so I hope that is clear.
You dont have to buy a whole non-working motherboard just to get one either, they are avalible seperately from a good electronics store (such as Tandy, RadioShack, Maplins for example depending were you are in the world).

Although I haven't done this myself, I presume it doesn't matter where the battery holder comes from.

If push comes to shove, I'm thinking you can cut the old battery off, leaving small stumps to solder some suitable lengths of wire to then solder the holder to the wires. The battery holder can then be placed out of the way.

Thanks for the replies. At home I have a non working ASUS motherboard which I think was produced sometime in 2006!

I was hoping I could use this motherboard battery holder rather then buy a battery like the one I already have on the A500+ since I think like that my A500+ motherboard would be much safe.

Can't see any problem with using that holder (fairly standard type these days) ... just go easy with the soldering iron  :-D

Something else I wanted to say is that the chip on the left side of the battery seems to have some 'blue' tingy on its pins, the brown thing between the chip and the battery is all covered with this 'blue' tingy. Is this bad :-( will I have to replace these two elements? My A500+ still boots without any problem so don't know if any real damage has been made!

Sounds like a hint of battery leakage there ... time to clean it off very very carefully and inspect for possible board and/or track damage.

If you put in a lithium coin type battery or anything else non-rechargeable

           DO! NOT! FORGET! THE! DIODE!

If you do, the charging circuitry will make the battery explode. No kidding.

Better use a germanium diode or the voltage drop of a silicon one will make the battery unusuable long before it's empty.

Another alternative is to use a quality NiCd or NiMH battery with a measure of cabling so it gets out of harm's way.

So I must remove this diode as well. Where is this diode exactly?

Or put in a rechargeable battery that includes the holder and everything else without having to worry about diodes etc. As I have done in all my Miggys that need batteries  :idea:

As far as I know that one isn't rechargeable. Amigakit may confirm that if you ask them. So it will still need a diode in the circuit to stop it exploding  :madashell:
