Hit the Amiga Lottery!!!
« on: June 22, 2008, 02:10:50 PM »
Well, I just wanted to share with the A.org community my good fortune of late.  I have been seeking an A1000 for some time now on eBay, but for one reason or another I could not find or acquire one.

I was told about Craigslist, kinda like the want ads in a news paper, well I found this fella selling a A1000 setup with a good bit of extras (listed below).  After talking with him on the phone for a while about computers in general and Amigas, the guy says to me if you will come pick it up you can have it for free, I about fell out of my seat.

I got over there ASAP and found this stuff in original boxes and packaging.  Just amazing to find an Amiga so well kept.  I have not had the time to delve to deep, but I have tested the computer and it works great.  I will submit some pictures here shortly.

Nice score, I need to watch craigs list more.

I got my 1000 in a similar deal about 7 years ago from a co-worker. System and lot of extras for free. Now if I could just get that kind of deal on a 4000T, or better... an A1. :-)

I think I'm just accross I85 from you. One more Amiga user and we almost have a Gwinnett Amiga group. :-P

Quite a haul there, Firedawg. congrats. ;-)  I used to work at an Amiga store back in the day... One of our old customers called me up and offered me his 2000 with supergen genlock and a 1000 for free. (I took them, of course!)

Before that, another old customer called up wanting to sell his 2500. I was strapped for cash at the time, and could only make what I considered a poor offer of 50 bucks... well he took the offer.

I also ended up with a fair fraction of the stock from the store when it died....

Thanks, everyone.  I will surely provide a good home for this beautiful machine.  Believe me, when I saw the condition of the computer and the boxes of stuff that came with the computer I did try to give him the money he was originally asking for.  I felt like a crook hauling it to my car.

We talked a little more about computers and programming, and by the way he is an engineer who works on jet propulsion systems, he writes programs that test these systems.  The company he works for does a great deal of business with Lockheed in Marietta (Plaz knows where that is).

The set up in his basement looked like a NASA control room, apparently he can monitor testing from his home.  Any way, most of the stuff he was explaining to me on his 2 computer screens, was going well over my head, so I took he's word on it that all those fluctuating numbers were indeed doing what he said they were doing.

I told him about the various projects I was working on, especially the Minimig, which seemed to catch his attention quite a bit.  Maybe, when I complete my third one I will send it to him as a thank you for his generosity.  Pictures are forth coming.

@Plaz - We should try to get a local group up.  Would not know where to start, but would help try.  Are you going to produce a GB A1000?

Mike

I found a very similar "deal" about a year back. I like the Starboard II expansions. I got two, one with the SCSI interface, so I added an external 540Mb hard drive. It has proven to be a very good, stable system.
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)
C-128 w/1571, 1750, & Final Cartridge III+

Yup, I've worked on a few Lockheed system in my time. So who's he working for EMS, LXE, Scientic Atlanta....?  :-)

Yes, I'll be building a GB A1000. How about you? Did you order a board too?

As for a group, it's not too hard. You just have to find enough interested folks and schedule a meeting some where. I think I may have become the last "active" member of the old Atlanta Amiga club. I'll send a PM an see what kind of trouble we can stir up.

It's hard to be a real user group any more when you don't have a company producing a product. Maybe it's more like an antique swap meet for now.

Not sure, he just generalized by saying "the company I work for".  I suspect if he worked for Lockheed he would have said so.

Yes, but this project appears to be a little more involved than the Minimig.  My board is ordered. I hope that I'm not getting to far over my head with this project.

Cool. I think with the new developments of the Minimig, GB1000, Mini-ITX Minimig, amongst others, I believe some people would return.  Although, I do not believe it would be a true end user club.

If not a lot of local interest, we can attract users from the SE region for quarterly gatherings.  Make a weekend out of it.  Well, just something to think about.
