Desktop shortcut on WB3.1: Is it possible?
« on: June 11, 2008, 12:12:00 PM »
I is it possible to have shortcuts on Workbench 3.1's desktop, rather than use a dock application?

Just wondering...

Cheers

You mean like dragging the program icon to the Workbench and then selecting it and right clicking on the mouse to get to the icon menu and choosing "Leave Out"?

Then if you change your mind you choose "Put Away"?

Is that what you are looking for?

Sorry, can't be done!
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

Move ths icon of the program you want to have as shortcut out if its folder and onto the workbench screen.  Then right click and select leave-out from the icons menu

Kind of, left click on the icon of the app/game you want a "shortcut" for and then right click and look for "leave out" option in the menus...

When finished use the "put away" option on it..

@Everblue

YES....just drag the icon from its original drawer right onto the Desktop (Workbench) screen  and while the icon is still highlighted go to the top menu and right click and select the "LEAVE OUT" option. When you reboot it will still be there until you select it agaian and use the "PUT AWAY" option from the menu...............as far as I can remember, I think Workbench was able to do this before Windows.

I dont think its really a shorcut though. If you delete it, the program actually gets deleted although not the rest of its contents.
CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

I'm pretty sure you don't need to drag the icon out first...

@ Everblue,

Leaving icons out works fine but leaving lots out is going eat up some RAM. You might also want to consider using ToolsDaemon21a.lha. With this you can start practically any program, game or utility without even having to open up a partition or drawer :-)

Of course it's not a shortcut. If you accidentally delete it, it will be deleted for sure. Anyway, if you have created some "shortcuts", you will see a file ".backdrop" in the root directory of the partition you created the "shortcut". This file is readable and shows the path of the "Leave Out" app.
