ShapeShifter tips
« on: May 19, 2008, 09:48:27 PM »
Hi all,
I'm trying to set up my A2000 with ShapeShifter 3.11

For the mac part,I got a Quadra rom (1mb i own  940Av for spareparts), Mac OS 8.0 CD and 7.5.2 for Performa, a 1Gb  dedicaced volume, and ShapeShifter 3.11

On the amiga side, i have :
A2000 ECS, FortyFusion 040RC-8mb-PNG 3.4, GVP SCSI HC8+II rev6 with 2mb and a 9.6Gb Sca HDD, Vlab Y/C, Buddha flash + CDRW, A2386sx + pc cards...

All is well set up to run properly with the A2386sx (enforcer).

about the forty fusion, i added in the SS :  setFF PRESET AMAXIV so it softkicked a modified rom (but it let on MMU/FPU/COPYBACK/VBR).

When I start with OS 7.5 it refused, told me to upgrade the SYSTEM  :-? , but with 8.0 i passed and boot.

Whatever, the biggest amount of "good ram" is around 6.4 mb, and under OS8, it told me that i only have 5.9mb and around 5/600 kb free when the CD drawer is open...

The system is quite slow to react, even if i increase the refresh rate to 100.
And the hdd speed seems low (buffer = 300), I took nearly 2 hours to prepare a 1Gb partition.
I had a Performa 630CD (LC040/33 + 32 mb) but it seems much more faster  :-o

I also tried to install the "MAC" device with the 2 others files, but when i put in DosDrivers, the system refuse to launch WB at the restart...

Any advice / tricks ? lots of site about that are down...
Keep the Faith !

For the harddisk emulation I use hardfiles with SFS and that's fast. Formatting in Shapeshifter is almost instant.

I read somewhere you need a rom that's 040 compatible for best speed. I guess your Quadra rom should do the trick though. Can't help you much here...

I succesfully used 7.5.3, 7.5.5 and 8.0 and System 7 is faster.

Maybe someone else can help on other things!

Under the memory settings, try setting the "ROM memory type" to "Any" - in my case this had a huge effect on performance (the emulator is dog-slow otherwise). If you're using native video, an external driver can really help. TurboEVD and Savage are on Aminet, MuEVD works great for me.

BTW: increasing the refresh rate only gives more slowdown into the emulation!

 Use less refresh!
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

I did a lot of emulation, some is hazy in my mind now..

You speed will be limited by ECS and lack of enough 32bit ram, 8 MB is not enough to do run OS8 well, probably just enough to run 7.5.  If you use third party video drivers they will give you speed but will chew up more of your RAM.

So I'd recommend: stick to System 7.1 or get more ram or use 4 colors or get a graphics card (this will make a huge difference).  I know you want software config advice but really you need good hardware to emulate beyond just getting a screen up.

I once had OS8.1 with Microsoft Office for Mac and Netscape and internet explorer running on dial-up on an A1200 68040 with 32 MB ram in 256 colors dblntsc.  The 256 colors slowed things down but it was very nice to look at.  I then moved up to an A4000 68060 with CV64 and MacOS8.1.  No complaints.

I put my FF40 to 32mb last night, installed Oxyron patcher, turn off the MMU for Video Refresh, reduced the refresh and it works a bit better.
I will try the drivers recommanded by " -D- ".
I would like so much to use a RTG card, but my FF40 needs the "PAL upgrade"...
