Can Amiga 3000's handle hard drives over 1GB

Hello out there everybody.  I just bought an Amiga 3000 recently and I was just wondering about it's built in SCSI Controller.  Can it handle hard drives larger than 1GB.  I am in the proocess of maybe buying a 2.1 GB hard drive and would like to know before I buy it.  Thanks.

sure it can, just depends of workbench/filesystem version. Im using 40gb barracuda ide drive thru acard thingy (OS 3.9). With 3.1 you will be stuck at <4GB.

Thanks for the response.  I am mainly asking this question because I heard that it uses the A2019 SCSI controller similar to the one I am using in My Amiga2000.  Unfortunately my A2000 only has the 6.6 Roms, so I am limited to hard drives under 1GB.  I was unsure whether the Amiga 3000 had this same limitation.

Chain, I see that you stated your using an IDE HD.  I am using the SCSI controller built into the motherboard.  Are you sure whether the built in motherboard can handle over 1 GB hard drives using OS 3.1?  Thanks.

I bought an A3000 in 1991.

In 1997 I added a 4GB drive to the onboard SCSI.  It still works perfectly to this day.  It has OS 3.1

The A3000 onboard SCSI is the most compatible of any SCSI solution.

Thanks for the info Chaoslord.  Do you think it is advisable to buy the "W.D. SCSI Chip 8" or would that really make any difference on performance?  Thanks.

im using onboard scsi contreoller, which is connected to a-card scsi-ide bridge, which is connected to ide drive, so onboard controller sure can handle it, no worries


im using scsi-ide bridge because scsi drives are small (cant find any cheap 40gb scsi drive here ),  also they are LOUD as hell. barracuda ata IV is sooo quiet
