Commodore 64 stuff (8-bit)

Last winter I bought a box of stuff.  I wanted it for the 1200 and the 1942.  It also included 2 C64s (an orig. breadbox and newer slim model), a 1541, a cassette drive, 4 power supplies with round connectors, a black P/S with a square connector and 5 joy sticks.  Unfortunately, there were no floppy interface or video cables.  There was also a non-Commodore "Wonder Wizard" (a Pong-like console).

I also have a C128 and 1571 with no cable.

The problem is I have never used a C64 and know little about them.  If the C64's OS is no more sophisticated than an Apple II's, then these machines aren't going to turn my prop. I'm tempted to keep one computer & drive and sell the rest.

Which to keep?  Can I get cables somewhere?  Software?  Is any of this sellable (the slim C64 is missing a few keys)?  What was so great about the C64 if I don't have a nostalgic memory of it?

Hit some radio shacks, lots of them still have the DIN assemblies on hand, I picked up a few the other day at the mall. before I had just been jerry rigging my c64 to the tv by sticking some wires in the appropriate holes.

My suggestion would be to try a C64 emulator and some disk images. The "OS" is essentially ancient MS basic, some disk-based GUIs exist (but pretty slow on unaccelerated machines).

I have mad respect for guys like red who build kick-ass projects based on C= 8-bit stuff, and while I still fire up my 128 on rare occasion, I doubt many non-nostalgics would develop lasting interest. (Maybe I'll be proven wrong.

There are a hell of a lot games on it, and lots of homebrew, too. If you ain't got nostalgic feelings about it, you'll get it instantaniously :-D (speaks out of experience).
To be able to acces all those games you'll need a X(M)1541 cable, and programs like Star Commander or CBM4Win/CBM4Linux.

If the Commodore was updated today, I'm sure it would be a fun computer.

There were two games I played on the Commodore 64 that were extremely fast because they were written 100% in ML code.

There were some cartridge games that worked really well.

I think the C-64 and the Amiga are good models of what consumers want.

There are Commodore clubs still in existence but you have to know where to look.  I even found a company that makes 5 1/4 inch disks but I don't know how much longer they will do it.
