Yamaha CDRW8424S flash to 1.0j help
« on: April 20, 2008, 09:03:48 PM »
I have a Yamaha CDRW8424S in my 4000T that sometimes (rarely) doesn't reset correctly. I'll get an error at bootup telling me "Unable to open CD1". I searched and found a flash upgrade that is supposed to fix similar problems on the MAC. It's firmware version 1.0j. I searched some more and was unable to find an Amiga version. The Win$lows version is an .exe so that is useless but I did dl the MAC version and decompressed it under Shapeshifter and copied over to the Amiga side. I used FlashROM 1.11 from the MakeCD site to try and flash it but it gave an error. Does anyone know where I can find an Amiga compatable version of this firmware? Does anyone have this Amiga firmware? Any pointers on flashing? Thanks.

Your best bet is to try and perform a firmware flash/update from a real PC or a real Mac. Amiga versions of firmware for CD burners do not exist.

Yamaha actually supported the Amiga back in the day. Unfortunately, they stopped making CD drives in the early 2000's. The link to the firmware on their site no longer works. "PC's" that use SCSI are rare these days. I did try the MAC flash utility under ShapeShifter and it didn't work.

I still use one of these drives in my A4000 every day. Bit slo on my A2091 though...  Need a proper SCSI card methinks...

@Tension

Make sure you have some memory on the 2091 as this provides ZorroII DMA memory and dramatically speeds things up. Also, a newer SCSI chip and a GURU ROM will help. With all the above, the 2091 can push the limit of what non fast 50 pin SCSI can do (3-5MB/sec).
