Using A600 as FTP server
« on: March 29, 2008, 06:05:40 AM »
My A600 has 2 MB of Chip RAM and kickstart 3.1. I'm using Miami 3.2B as TCP/IP stack and a PCICIA network card

I want to turn my A600 as a FTP server to copy files from my pc to my A600. I could use Samba, but my my A600 only has 2 MB of RAM and A 68000 processor is very slow.

Does someone know how I could use ftpd2 or another FTP server? Or other program?

I know it runs under Genesis and AMITCP. The Genesis version of OS 3.9 doesn't work and I can't get hold of AMITCP version 4.

That's also an option. I will try it.

Hell, somebody out there has a zenith 80286 working as a Webserver, can't be that hard to push the Amiga to it. ;-)

Not sure about Miami, doesn't it come with an ftp server? Shouldn't be a problem actually. On my A600 with AmiTCP 4.0 demo, I just created the user I wanted to use for transfer, started AmiTCP:bin/inetd and that's it. If you're really lazy, you can also just throw in NetworkBootDisk.  Even runs on a 1MB A600.

Buy a PCMCIA CF adapter and a 4Gig CF card.

It will take 10 mins to fill the CF card using a USB 2.0 card reader and 2 seconds to walk it over to the Amiga ;-)

No, no... no serial/parallel connections when you can use network cards. Much faster and painless. PCMCIA ones work like a charm. There's a lot of different ftp servers on Aminet (search "ftpd"), most should work also in Miami even when instructions are usually for AmiTCP/IP relatives. Stacks are always pretty similar, just find where the wanted configs are.

One option is to mount shared folder from PC to your Amiga with smbfs. It's just one small exe for your Amiga, no need for full samba installation. But if you download files with PC then it of course would be easier to transfer files with it all the way to Amiga too. Your original idea with ftpd on Amiga suits for that indeed.

I try the Netwrkbootdisk. Finally I can get a ftp connection with my Amiga 600.

Now I have another problem. I changed the FTPdir from RAM: to CompactFlash:, but it still show the RAM disk.

I checked every config file, but can't get it work.

I also like to have the option commands of FTPD.

I think you have to change the home directory of the user "amiga_user".

BTW: Though you start in RAM: when opening a connection, you should still be able to do a "cd CompactFlash:" in the ftp client. (Yes, you can use Amiga style filesystem syntax there ;-) )

setup a share on the PC, and get SMB handler off aminet onto the amiga to mount the share. you then don't have to worry about samba configs, and share creation on the amiga side. you still need the samba services setup in your IP stack

other thing is, create your ideal amiga setup in winUAE, copy it down to a CF card on a usb, or IDE adapter, then when done, plug it into the A600's IDE port...

can you boot an amiga of a CF card in  a PCMCIA adapter?

the main issue with running a TCP/IP stack, and a full samba share setup, is memory. samba services can suck 2+Megs out of your system. if thats all you got, then you gots problems :)

A500, A600, A1200x3, A2000, A3000, A4000 & a CD32.
and probably just like the rest of you, crates full of related "treasure" for the above XD

Oops, there's wrong information about that then. Edit amitcp:db/passwd and change "ram:" to any other location on amiga_user line.

And as said, you can also change dir from your ftp-client to any amiga path you like. Put the amigaish : there too when chaning dir.

Thank you for your information. I alrady found it.
Now I can make a FTP connection from my PC to my A600.
The Networkbootdisk works very easy. I recommend this to everybody.

I know I can use Samba connecting to a PC network. I wrote a Dutch tutorial about that.

Samba 2.0.7. doesn't work anymore with Vista.

Here some specs about my A600:

2 MB Chipmem
Kickstart 3.1 and Workbench 3.1
Target 10MBit PCMCIA network card
IDE 2.5" CF reader with a Kingston 1 GB CompactFlash Card
A600/A1200 reset fix
