AmiTCP 2.2 + iBrowse 2.4: No connection
« on: March 28, 2008, 07:08:05 PM »
I've just got AmiTCP 2.2 installed and configured under 3.1. I can ping other devices on the network and web sites too, and can ftp in to Aminet. So I know the connection is working.

I then installed iBrowse 2.4, but it won't see the connection. I get the error "Unable to open bsdsocket library or compatible networking interface", as if the TCP/IP stack wasn't running.

Is this a known problem? A configuration issue? Or something else?

Whilst I'm no expert, lack of bdsocket says that there isn't a connection. But you say you can ping websites, so there is a connection.

This leads me to think that it's a configuration problem and after a quick shufty, I think I may have found it.

If you go to IBrowse Preferences/Settings/Security, and see if Use MiamiSSL is ticked. Try unticking it ans see if that works.

If not, I don't really know, but bdsocket only appears when online and if IBrowse says it's not there, you ain't online

Here's a patch to bring that install up to 2.3, but why not use 3.0b2?

IBrowse tries to open version 3 of bsdsocket.library. This probably means that you need at least AmiTCP V3.

ftp://ftp.back2roots.org/pub/geekgadgets/amiga/m68k/alpha/amitcp/

Why don't you use Genesis or Miami ?

Don't you own OS 3.9 ? Even if you don't want to use OS 3.9, you can unlock the Genesis demo with the genesiskey.library from the OS 3.9 CD.

Bye,
Thomas

I tried 3.0b2 but it kept asking for a root password during the install, and also when it tried to log in (to what I have no idea!) I Googled a bit and found that this may be a bug so went for 2.2 instead.

I'll try the 2.3 patch and Wurzel's suggestion and see if either makes any difference.

@Thomas
I was trying to avoid using Genesis if possible. I want my 3.1 install to be as lightweight as possible. I will try upgrading my current installation of AmiTCP to 3.0 and see if that works. Failing that I'll use Genesis.

Have a look at this script: http://mitglied.lycos.de/thomasrapp/makenetboot.txt

It creates a very light-weight boot disk with LAN and internet access from AmiTCP 3.0. Just unpack the AmiTCP archive to somewhere and specify the path as tcppath.

Bye,
Thomas

You're a miracle worker! :-) I modified your script to copy the files to a directory in RAM and removed the parts which format and initialise the disk. I then used parts of the startup-sequence as a new startnet script and it's all working beautifully - including iBrowse :-D

Thanks again

Not that we didn't talk about that before, just half a year ago. With exactly the same hint and result.
