Anyone play MORIA?
« on: March 25, 2008, 02:15:34 PM »
I love the game MORIA and used to play it all the time on my A500.  The Amiga version is the best of all the platforms.

However, ever since I upgraded my Amiga (either to OS3.1+ or when I added my 68040 card), it has problems.

The problem is that any spell casting character (like a Mage) never has any MANA magic points.  i.e. the character starts off with 0 mana and a maximum of 0 mana, and can never gain any more.  This seems like a bug in the game to me.

I've tried all sorts of degraders & kickstart 1.3 softkickers, but it never seems to solve this issue.  Other than that, the game works great.  But this is a major bug.

Anyone know of a solution?

He's probably talking about UMoria.  It's available on Aminet.  I can try to download it tonight and see if it works.  I have 3.1 and a 2630 in my A2000, so it won't be an exact match for you system...

Along with Civilization and Rogue, Moria is responsible for many of the 'missing' hours of my life! :)

Sorry....er....I guess it is called UMoria.  The "official" icon and title screen for the game just call it "MORIA".  It's the graphical port or a public domain Rogue type game for the Amiga.  It is quite a famous game, and has been available for the Amiga since the 1980s (on Aminet, etc.).

I just really miss this game, since discovering the strange bug on updated Amiga systems.  I have tried doing clean installs, downloading the archive fresh from Aminet, I've softkicked into WB1.3, I've turned off caches, I've turned off extra RAM, I've turned off the 68040 and booted with the 68000.  No luck.

If you want to test it for the bug, just create a Human Mage character.  A Mage SHOULD start out with a few Mana points, but for some reason it doesn't, and can never get any more.

I actually do have an Amiga 500 with hard drive I've saved just for the purpose of running old games.  But that will have to wait for another house, with more room for a dedicated games machine.

I'm just surprised that Moria has this bug, because that last version came out in around 1993, after 68040s and WB3.1 had already been around.  It is also Workbench friendly...

Ah, Moria. How I loved that game. Then I stopped playing...

... because I found Angband. Which is similar, just bigger, and in my opinion better. Been playing that ever since version 2.4.Frog-knows.

I've never really gotten into the variants, though - I just like plain old vanilla Angband - one of the best games ever. And if you don't agree I've got a Tulwar *Holy Avenger* here somewhere that'll persuade you... :)

One of the big attractions of Amiga Moria was the custom characters used for the graphics.  Is there an Amiga version of Angband that uses custom graphics?

Those two pages should have everything you need. :)

Full (disable-able) graphics/sound/multi-window support.. very good port. But I'm not sure Bablos (the porter) has been active of late - you can probably compile the code for the latest versions still though! v3.0.6 (the latest that I saw) is available for OS4, but I don't know if it has Amiga-native support (gfx etc.).

Enjoy - just don't be surprised if you start to lose hours/days/weeks/months of your life to a little '@' character.

Mea Culpa!

I found out why the MANA points in Moria don't show up.  It had been so long I had forgotten that there is a buried command you need to implement.  "G" for GAIN SPELL.  Not entirely obvious.  Even when you advance a level, your MANA will not show up on your character stats unless you press this key every time.

Well, that solves a mystery of several years for me!
