Dune II has an installer script on one of the floppies - when you have the hard drive installed and you boot the machine into Workbench, put the first floppy in. An icon will show up on the Workbench screen, just open that and run the installer. It's been literally 10 years since I've done that though so the installer could be on a different disk - some games put it on the last disk. Most games that are designed to be installed use non-standard installers, some of which require a basic knowledge of file and path naming conventions, as already pointed out, the Workbench manual is great for that.

Unfortunately you don't get all that many newcomers to the Amiga, so you won't find all that many beginners' guides around, but if you're stuck, just ask on here and someone's bound to help ya!

Welcome along :-)

Thanks for all your tips and suggestions.

Having spent some time (and finding a pdf of the workbench 3.0 manual) I'm feeling a little more confident with the Amgia.

Thanks for the offered of hardware. I've ordered the 2.5 cable off Ebay (hopefully arrive after Paddy's day,)
If the 2gb drive works okay I might take the plung and buy a larger one from amigakit. I've ordered a shed load of games from here and there, due to arrive over the next week.

I have a question about compatability. I bought Switchblade II and it doesn't seen to play very well on the A1200. as compatability patches easy to come across?
Wikipedia states there are a number of compatability issues on the A1200 with A500 games.

Thanks to you all.

As for compability problems most of us amiga users use WHdload to install games and patch them to obtain 100% playability with games used both for older amiga 500 games and mever aga games ... So if with WHdload there are almost NO compatability issues on the A1200 with A500 games.
