Got an A2000 with a problem out of the loft

Hi,

After reading an interesting thread about someone aquiring an A2000, I decided to get mine down from the loft :-)

This one has no HDD but happily boots into a Workbench 1.3 floppy disk. The problem is that the right mouse button does not function when pressed. However, right Alt + right Amiga key does work from the keyboard. As you can see from the photo, the mouse port has odd screws compared to the joystick port. Do you think someone has tried to mend this problem in the past and failed? Is there anything else that could cause this problem besides the port itself?

Although you say it has no battery fitted - has the previous battery leaked in the past and destroyed some of the tracks?

I've heard that this can cause problems with mouse, joysticks and sound   :-?

The battery is in about the same area as the mouse ports etc  :cry:

Actually your fuse at F1 looks questionable...  Have you tried another mouse?  Running a game (just for testing purposes 8-) ) and see if the buttons work and to check to see if it's not just the mouse.

When I have more time, I'll have to do a complete strip down so that I can flip the motherboard over etc. I've just used "Say" on the Workbench 1.3 floppy to make the A2000 speak, and I have sound out of both audio channels :-)

I'll go find an old game on floppy for it to boot into, so as to be able test the operation of joystick port 8-)

Well my 6 year old daughter is checking out the sound and joystick by playing this game. All is looking and sounding ok :-)



But now I've got to somehow get her off of the A2000 :lol:

Obviously those two screws on the mouse port are not original. So someone had the motherboard out for some reason. I have seen the occasional motherboard that was sensitive to those screws.... tighten them down, and the mouse port fails, back off a bit and it's OK. It's been a while so I don't remember what the failure was... Incidentally, the fuse mentioned earlier in the thread has nothing to do with the buttons, only the motion.

It is not just the screws that are different, the complete port is different from the original. Might be due to bad soldering that the right mousebutton is mis-behaving. You're sure the mouse is in good condition?

I was thinking maybe one of the two CIAs is on its way out but then you should have more troubles. If you're very confident with electronics, you could swap both CIAs from one socket to the other and see if the mouse is behaving well (and some other parts of the Amiga now failing).

It turns out that the screw with the chewed up looking head just goes round and round when I try to tighten or unscrew it. I'll probably have to remove the motherboard to get it out/replace/fix it. I've just varied the tightness of the other screw while also trying to vary the pressure by pressing down on the chewed screw, while also clicking the right mouse button at the same time. No joy with doing that though.

Yes, I've tried 4 or 5 mice in different Amigas and this A2000. The right button only fails in the A2000.

EDIT - It looks like nearly all the chips on an A2000 mobo fit like the ROMS of an A4000. In which case I could have a go at swapping the CIA chips. But I'll only interfere with them as a last resort. I'll take the mobo out and check it over properly, including a close inspection of the under side of  the mouse port.

The problem was the pins that attach the mouse port to the motherboard.....



I have today had a new mouse port professionally fitted and the right mouse button is now working fine :-)
