Fatal error.. just killed a 1084 :-(

Hi mates... well, I made a big mistake today...really BIG.

I was about to test an Amiga 2000, I'm not so used to it, I just got it a few days ago.. so i brought my old trusty C=1084 monitor and connected it the Amiga, however I was in front of the machine and I didn't realize that it had been connected to the serial port instead of the RGB on the machine!!! So, I turned the machine on and oops, I heard the sound of a small spark going in and I turned off everything off immediately... so there, I killed something inthe monitor's RGB logic... composite video works perfect but the rgb doesn't, when I connect the machine to the monitor (or another machine) it just shows lines everywhere..

So, I'm sure nobody has been stupid enough to make such a mig mistake but I was wondering if anybody ever went through something like this... any idea if this is something that can be fixed?

If you heard something/saw a spark, chances are that a decent TV repairman could identify and repair whatever was damaged. (There should be some pretty good visual clues.)

You managed to connect an 23 pin RGB plug to an 25 pin serial connector ?
Anyhow I don`t think it is worth the trouble or money to repair the monitor. Just get an other 1084, they are cheep today, it`s usually the postage that costs you a lot.

Yeah, I have all my hopes on that... I downloaded all the diagrams I could find in the internet, I hope some good TV techie can fix it..

Yeah, I managed to do that.. I was not looking at the ports when I connected the monitor, so I accidentally connected the cable to the serial port instead of the RGB... as for getting another monitor, well, as you say, postage could be the double the expense of repairing this one, besides this one still has great picture, and it's in very good overall condition, that's why I don't wanna let it die...

oh mate how choul u u know this means the amiga fire squad am sorry mate its just not good enough he he.
hmm anyone think l left pair of trousers over the back of my 1084s and went to work , only to come home to find it umm yes not working .
di it say chould not connect to amiga.com when u switched it on.
serously well just take it in to repair shop , oh dont do what l did and take in 2 1084s and 1942 montior and never went back and the place shut down and lost them all opps.
l brought amiga 2000 and in momemnt of madness pulled the scsi power lead of when the psu was going, to the backing nah not musicall of arching sounds and thats all she wrote on that psu.
cheers buddy , oh reminds me the time l put the trottle slid in the trail bike in the wrong way around and ended up in mums rose garden at 2am upside down with bike reving its #@@ of he he and left tire mark 4 feet up the side the house. but worse still l got black eye and everone asked how l got it.

Every TV repair service will fix it.

naaaa! if with the composite input works, is only a matter of a/some blowed traces/picofuses on the RGB/sync/ rails or such.

This made me think you might have used a 25 to 9 pins serial cable, since (well, mine at least) a 1084 monitor has, like a pc's com port, a 9 pin input.

Funny, most of the TV repair people that I've met usually wouldn't waste their time with Amiga monitors. When My 1084 got fried he was looking at least $80 just to crack it open and try to fix it. Not to mention what the parts were going to be.

They hardly wanted to touch one of the Sun monitors that I had.
