40gig HD
« on: February 14, 2008, 07:20:37 PM »
Ok Guys,
I was given a 40Gig HD for Christmas I was going to use it on the PS2, but I think I may well use it on my Amiga (signature)
I have a spare IDE Secondary that I can use, so I put it on the system and the Amiga did not see it at all.
I used the HDToolbox and nothing.
This HD was formated from an XP system using the NTFS format command.
Is this why?
I can easily put it back into my XP tower and reformat it using the FAT or FAT32 command, will my Amiga see the HD then do you think?

TIA,

Mike.

The filesystem it's been formatted with doesn't matter. Is the disk sharing the IDE cable with another disk? In that case check the jumper. One disk will be jumpered to Master, the other to Slave. If it's alone on the cable, make sure it's jumpered to Master.

This assumes it's an IDE disk.

Edit: But then, you already said it's an IDE disk...
Theology is just a debate over who to frame for creating reality.

Yes its IDE, and yes its set to slave, so I don't know why it does that?
I may take of the CD burner just to see it the Amiga will see it and then sort it out that way.
If I remember a long while ago I am sure I had to do that, take a the CD burner out and then put on the HD as slave (CD burner was slave)
And that worked for some reason, I know it should not work that way, but it does.

Primary Master OS3.9
Primary Slave nothing
Secondary Master DVD ROM
Secondary Slave CD Burner
So when I put it on the Primary Slave it don't get seen.
How ever a 100meg IDE Zip drive does as slave
It don't make sense.

No. PC file system does not affect AmigaOS at all.

I have a spare IDE Secondary that I can use

As always, all the needed details are missing. I suppose the "spare secondary" refers to the second channel of a 4-way IDE adapter. What kind of 4-way adapter is it ? To access the second channel a special software is needed. Which software do you use ?

If you use the IDEfix software, there are two parts of it. One is atapi.device and one is the IDEfix program itself. To access a CD or DVD drive you can use atapi.device and don't need IDEfix. But to access a HDD you have to run the IDEfix program, otherwise devices on the second channel are not seen.

Check HDToolbox' tooltypes. If there is one beginning with SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=, make sure that it reads SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=scsi.device. Otherwise HDToolbox will not scan the correct driver.

Also remember that you have to set the jumpers correctly. The can only be one master and one slave on each channel. Two masters or two slaves on the same channel lead to corruption and data loss.

Also make sure that the IDE cables are connected correctly. Especially if you mix 2.5" with 3.5" devices. Although there are two 3.5" connectors and one 2.5" connector on the IDEfix adapter, you can only connect four devices. The 2.5" connector and one of the 3.5" connectors are shortened, they belong to the same channel. So if you use the 2.5" connector, only one of the 3.5" connectors can take two devices, the other one holds the slave of the 2.5" connector.

Bye,
Thomas

Ahh yes quite right.

Ok, I use IDE`99 4 way Interface and the software that comes with it, OS3.9 with all updates.
As before.

Primary Master OS3.9
Primary Slave nothing
Secondary Master DVD ROM
Secondary Slave CD Burner.

I do not use OS3.9 CD drivers but CD drivers from the IDE'99 4 way software.

Download and use hdinst from Aminet instead hdtoolbox (who is a little buggy, sometimes).
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

Try setting the HDD as master and the CD-rom as slave.(but run the HDD as stand alone master first to see if it pops up.) You may as well try cable select and limit cap to see if the software finds it...

From my PC experience some HDD do not like to stand as slave when connected with a CD-rom on the same cable. But cable select may override the HDDs will....  :-)
