Trying to add hard drives to A3000
« on: December 02, 2007, 03:38:03 PM »
Hello. I'm trying to add a couple of hard drives to
an A3000. This machine has KS 3.1 roms, the rev 8
SCSI chip, and a CV64 video card, otherwise it's
basically original. Somehow I was able to set up
an external FAT32 disk with 3 partitions and have
no trouble accessing that using giggle-disk
(great prog). Ditto a CD rom drive.
The internal drive is an IBM DORS 2Gig, which I
also installed myself.

Whenever I insert either of the other drives (also
both IBM), either
on the internal ribbon or through the external port,
the machine goes into the tank when it gets to that
drive. I have no trouble with either of these drives
running as externals on an A1200 with a DKB Ferret.
What in the world did I somehow remember to do right
when I installed the first internal drive, that I'm
forgetting to do now? If it is a matter of "validating"
the drive, how long should this take? I gave it
about 12 hours on each drive, with no success.

Thanks
Larry

The SCSI on my A3000D is very fussy even with the -08 WD chip. It seems to be the fastest and most reliable with just 1 internal drive.

My only thought would be to double check that your termination is set up correctly. The drive on the internal connector should be terminated, as well as the last drive in the chain on the external connector.

If the extra drive(s) are installed on the cable inside of the machine, then remove the termination from all of the drives but the last one in the chain.

And don't forget to install the onboard terminators if you remove the external chain. Or better: get an active external terminator and plug that to the port.

It appears to have been a jumpering problem.
Termination was OK, but I had to turn off parity.
This was not a problem on my PC or the Ferret. I really
don't understand SCSI so well. Now both drives
are recognized, but I'm missing 3.5 gig on the larger of
the two (which I have in an external cage). Progress!

Thanks again.
