Amiga A2000 powers up but does not start
« on: December 01, 2007, 12:21:04 PM »
Hi I have a Amiga 2000 which has been stored for a while. I powered it up today and everything runs but it does not boot up and put anything on the screen. If this was a PC then i would think the internal battery was at fault. As i know nothing about Amigas and it was purchased in Germany all books are in German. Can anybody help me???????

HI
  It is the original Highscreen one that was purchased with it and has the number KP748/30E on the back. I have noticed that the battery has some white corrosion on it but has not yet affected the cicuit board.

As Homer said what type of monitor?
Also is there any hard drive activity or any clicking or disk accessing coming from the floppy drive?
I would desolder that battery before it spreads to the motherboard (you may want to check underneath the MB as well for any corrosion)

Hi
there is not drive activity or clicking when switched on.
The Monitor only has Highscreen printed on it and was supplied new with the A2000 when i purchased it in 1990. The screen comes on white and then changes to grey when the Amiga is switched on.If i Remove the battery will it run without it or do i need to replace it.I have only ever used the Amiga as a games machine so am a novice when it comes to the parts within. I am used to fixing PC's so my knowledge of the Amiga is limited.

With regards to the battery you can replace it or leave out (depends if you want to keep time), only my main A2000 has had it's battery replaced the other is left bare.
Have you checked all the seating of the chips and the cards?
Just press all the chips down just in case some are loose.
also what hard drive card have you got? and does it look like it in good condition?
Check the whole MB for any signs of corrosion.
I'm just getting back into Amiga's myself so i may have forgotten something.

Hi
  I have just turned it back on again and am now getting a red screen. I read on another site that this is a ROM failure.Can anyone explain please.

Hi
  I have checked it an it looks fine. The battery corrosion is only on the battery and there is none on the mother board. I have pushed the board to make sure it is fitted OK. There are no cards in it as it is as it was when brought brand new and has had no additions put on it. The Mother board is a amiga B2000-cr Haynie/fisher A/w 912723 Rev 4 and it looks brand new.

Try this site http://www.amigahistory.co.uk/selftest.html It says red means error in rom either not seated properly or it no good...  :-(
I have another link somewhere with a full explaination but i can't find it atm. But i'm sure someone better then me already has the explaination and will give it.  :-)

 Baby steps to make your B2000 comes back to life.

 1. Open it and gently pry the ROM out and them put it back to its socket;

 2. Do the very same in any other socketed chip you see;

 3. Remove the battery! Those evil batteries have killed a lot of good Amiga hardware around the world. I you mind the lack of a clock source, use a "lithium hack" (put a socketed coin shape battery with a germanium diode to avoid the recharging system to blow the battery);

 4. Check the caps in the PSU. They may have dried, bulk or (worse) leak inside the PSU, destroying it. Those electrolytic caps are inexpensive to buy and easy to swap.

Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.
