Amiga 4000 Mouse and Keyboard problem?
« on: December 01, 2007, 07:19:27 PM »
Hi,

Just when I was sorting out my A4k Rev D system for sale (and had a couple of interested parties) it decides to play up on me.

Basically, found this afternoon that the mouse doesn't work (can't move the mouse pointer) although buttons work as I can get into the early startup menu - although can't move mouse there either.

It was fine last time I used it a couple of days ago (at most).  There was a big thunderstorm in the area this morning with some close lightening strikes, but the A4K wasn't plugged into anything.  :-?

Keyboard also doesn't appear to be working.  Caps lock light works, so there's power to it - but I can't do any keyboard shortcuts, and Ctrl-A-A reboot doesn't do anything - just flashes the Ctrl light once.

I take it this sounds like one of the CIA chips has died?  Great timing!  :getmad:

Anybody any suggestions as to any possible method of repair in the UK?  Or would it be easier to simply get a new motherboard (would like to get a Rev D like this one).

May end up just stripping it for spares if it comes to that...  :-(

Forget you were that close.  :D  Thought you were in Caerphilly though?

Anyhow - It boots up ok, audio's fine etc.  Loaded up a couple of games and buttons work on the joystick, but not the directionals - so does look like a CIA chip.

I take it all I need to bring is the base unit?  Whats the best time to pop it around, and can you pm me your address?

Many Thanks!

Well, turns out the faulty CIA chips is the metal one at the front which you put a key into...  :-D

Initial test seem to indicate the issue was a faulty keyboard lock switch on the front of the A4k.  Dunno if its the switch, or the wire has shorted or whatever, but when I disconnect the keyboard switch lead it all works!

So thankfully doesn't actually seem as bad as I thought, unless its an intermittant fault.  I'll test it over the next few days and see how it goes.

Fingers crossed! :-)
