at power adaptor and amiga 1200, does it work?
« on: November 19, 2007, 01:15:43 PM »
amigakit sells a adaptor that says you meerely plug in the power soure into the adaptor (comes with amiga power cable attached) and whoooo you turn the at power supply into a power supply for the amiga 1200. i was wondering if anyone had tried this and does it in fact work???i do not want to plug in the power supply i have (at) into my a1200 and blow it up).
thanks much
james usa :-D  :-?

UPDATE: i guess i was to wordy, my question was is this adaptor all i need to turn an at power supply into a power supply for the 1200 or must i do a revision on the at power supply. i am not electrically inclined and i would not lke having to mess with wires and things.
thanks

I assume you're referring to this?

I have never used that particular cable, but I have built my own ATX to Amiga adapter, and can confirm that it does work. As long as the voltages going to each pin on the Amiga PSU socket are the same as they would be if using the original Amiga PSU, then it will be fine. Since that cable is designed to be used with an Amiga and an AT PSU then I assume it won't blow anything up

I've built my own, and used a pre-made adaptor...

...very easy, and very reliable. Just don't cross your colors if you make your own! ;)

I remember when I built mine, it was before I towerised my A1200 and I was using Kickstart 3.1 with no hard drive (I only had a 3.5" HDD which is why I needed the ATX PSU to power it and the A1200). So of course, when you turn on a KS3.1 machine with no hard drive, you have a long wait before the machine gives up looking for a HDD. That 30 second delay has never felt so long as it did the first time I powered it up with a hacked-on ATX PSU

There's a nice guide to rolling your own on
Ian Stedman's web page:

http://www.ianstedman.co.uk/Amiga/amiga.html

Click on "Amiga Power Supply Guide."

I used an ATX supply and a spare power plug & cable
that I got off of e-bay for a few dollars. I mounted
an old-fashioned terminal strip onto the
side of the power supply and soldered to that. If you
can find a supply with a real rocker switch on the back,
you can avoid adding extra circuitry for the on-off switch.

I modified an older AT psu to work in my towerised A1200.
I triple checked power outpust five times before connecting it to the 1200... And it still works very well...

I am however planning to remove the power connector inside the a1200 and replace it with some sort of connection for ATX psu with powerswitch... That is to remove the external power cables and to modify my old chieftek tower to house the a1200...
A work in progress....  :-D

I did both make my own adapter after that guide i also used that Elbox At - amiga adapter at some state too. If you have a old amga and AT\ATX psu lying around i would do that hack and just use the connector from your amiga psu. It is easy to rewire ...

We have already replied to you yesterday- shortly after we received a user unknown mail back from Yahoo as you had misspelt your email address on our email form.

In the email we said that the AT adapter will work with an AT PSU connecting to the P8 plug.  The other end plugs into the A500/A600/A1200 five pin square power connector as usual.  The standard AT PSU does not require modification in any way.

I remember when i was replacing my original PSU with a ATX PSU in my A2000 and did my first boot, i had forgot to connect my monitor to the computer and remember getting a little sweaty before i understand the situation.  :-D
