A1000 hard drive
« on: September 09, 2007, 10:21:11 PM »
Hello everyone,

Apologies in advance for the 'noob' question. I did a search here for an answer and apart from some lovely photos of A1000s, didn't find the answer I needed.

I want to add a hard disk drive to My A1000. I presume there is no room inside so what are my options?

How hard would it be to get the necessary interface or external item needed?

Many thanks in advance.

External Hard drives made for the A1000 are rare as hell.

an example external HD

I think Bodega Bay made something similar. Your options are pretty limited.

An actual built-for-A1000 HD is going to be rare. But there are other options. Many A500 HDs will work, they just plug on backwards because the A1000's expansion slot is on the opposite side of the case. It's also higher, so you have to put something under the HD.

There were also some cases built that let you use one or two ZorroII cards (A2000 cards). I had one of those on my 1000 back in the day. It held a 4MB RAM card and a SCSI controller. There was room for a power supply and a 3.5" HD in the box. The A1000's power supply wasn't up to spinning a HD... but I'd bet you could get away with a 2.5" laptop drive.

It would probably be tricky to find one of those expansion boxes now. I sold mine years ago. But there is a hack on Aminet that lets you build a single Zorro adapter for the 500 or 1000. So if you're handy with a soldering iron.

It might also work to hack on an IDE interface... but it's been a while since I looked at that.

Not so rare. I still have my 1000 and all the extras I bought.
Including a CLtd scsi interface and ext harddrive box.

I think if you could find the interface?
The ext harddrive box should be easy.

Get a ICD AdIDE2 if you can find it and you can have a 2.5" IDE laptop HD installed in your A1000.  See my image gallery of it installed in an A500.
